Watch The New Ford Fiesta ST Indulge Its Need For Speed... Underground

Turns out one of Europe's greatest driving roads is in a salt mine.

The beauty of a hot hatch is its versatility. Not only can it handle the daily grind, but can do it on a variety of surfaces. (That's why hot hatches serve as the basis for modern rally cars.) But those surfaces are typically found on... you know, the surface. This time, though, Ford has taken its latest pocket rocket off the road and put it underneath in an underground salt mine. And the resulting video – the latest in the Europe's Greatest Driving Roads series – is not something you see every day.

The series has already seen the Mustang (for example) tackle the Transfagarasan Highway in Romania and theFord GT on the Atlantic Ocean Road in Norway. But where the previous nine episodes in the series have all been shot above ground, this latest went 400 meters (1,312 feet) below the earth's surface.

The promo featuresthe latest Fiesta ST, a three-cylinder turbocharged firecracker with 200 metric horsepower on tap and a fighting spirit for tackling whatever you can throw at it (or throw it into). Behind the wheel for the endeavor was one Elfyn Evans, who currently competes in the World Rally Championship driving... you guessed it:a Ford Fiesta.
