Watch The Lucid Air Go For A Spin Around Manhattan

Video /9 Comments

This time, it's with an almost production-ready vehicle.

Having been shownhow the Lucid Air is madeand whatits stunning factoryis like, our excitement for the launch of the EV is peaking. Fortunately, we won't have too much longer to wait, as Lucid's CEO Peter Rawlinson says that we'll see the production version later this year. In the build-up to this, he's taken an earlier version of the carfor a spinto see where it needs work and where it's already impressive. Now, he's done the same thing with a "release candidate vehicle", or a car that the people putting it together deem just about ready for production.

Rawlinson is driving in New York City, determining how the car is to pilot in the city. Fortunately, his remarks aren't as difficult to validate as those of another EV company CEO whose name we won't mention, because Rawlinson points out both the highs and the lows that he perceives while driving the car.

In the above video, only one issue is made obvious - switchgear that is not taut enough - but Rawlinson immediately comments that he wants it fixed so that it has "that Swiss watch quality". A positive feature that he points out is the overall layout and design of the cabin. It's very ergonomic, and the quality is great.

Rawlinson also mentions improvements that theLucid Airhas undergone since beta testing, highlighting how the wing mirrors were redesigned to minimize the size of a blind spot that could have plagued drivers. This drove the suppliers and engineers mad, he says, but it was worth it.

Lucid's CEO also talks about the compliance of the suspension, the sensitivity of the steering, and the feel of the seats. He also mentions that the car feels compact and usable in a big city despite loads of interior space and comfort. We'll have to wait for the production car to see if our thoughts mirror Rawlinson's, but as of now, we expect to be impressed.
