A behind-the-scenes plant tour reveals how Ineos Automotive produces the Grenadier off-road vehicle at its manufacturing facility in Hambach, France. The Hambach plant produced the Mercedes-Benz Smart ForTwo from 1998.

The company took around 12 months to reconfigure the Grenadier assembly line, with the first vehiclerolling off the plant in October 2022. Ineos Automotive's Hambach plant uses robots to make production more efficient - something that has become the norm in modern manufacturing facilities such as Mercedes-Benz's plant in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where it makes the C-Class. The robots are utilized in the welding process, ensuring faster turnaround time. The human workforce comes into play after the welding process to polish the weld spots and remove any extra material with grinders.

Robots also conduct the painting process while the chassis or the vehicle is placed in a conveyor. Robotic arms paint the chassis using a preconfigured spray cone nozzle to conform with Ineos' standards. Humans then conduct the paint inspection in an illuminated chamber where the surface is polished using an electric brush.

Ineos' Hambach facility also features a manipulator - a machine used to lift car components resulting in a more conducive work environment for the workers. Another tool that helps the human workforce is the electrical tire lifting tool, used to install the spare tire at the rear door. The video also features the Ineos Grenadier's BMW turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine.

Beyond the Grenadier, Ineos alsorevealed the Grenadier Quartermaster pickup truckat the 2023 Goodwood Festival of Speed last month, which will also be produced at its Hambach plant. At the same time, an electric 4x4 version is expected to bereleased in early 2026.
