Watch Gordon Murray's First Drive Of T.50 Hypercar

It's only been around six months since Gordon Murray Automotive (GMA) revealed its spiritual successor to the legendaryMcLaren F1, the T.50 supercar, as a project. Amazingly, the first engineering test is already hitting the track, and Gordon Murray made sure he got to take T.50 Experimental Prototype 2 (XP2) for its first spin. Handily, Gordon Murray Automotive is housed within spitting distance of the Top Gear Test Track in Dunsfold, Surrey, UK. This video isn't the fastest lap ever filmed of a car taking on theTop Geartrack, though, as XP2's 3.9-liter Cosworth V12 engine is currently limited to 3,000 rpm. Despite not being able to scream its way to the engine's 12,100 rpm redline, the V12 still sounds delicious.

Despite not having a lot of room to play with the engine andget the T.50 up to a speed where aerodynamics kick in, Murray still manages to get the tires to chirp and get an initial feel of the car. "The XP2 prototype is currently running at considerably less revs than its 12,100-rpm limit, yet the T.50 felt fantastic on my first drive," he said in afterward. "The car was responsive, agile, and rewarding to drive. It was a fantastic experience to be sitting in the center of the car once again with great all-round visibility and I can see how much the owners will enjoy this experience."

GMA plans to start the T.50's 100 unit production run in January of 2022, along with a 25 unit run of theT.50S Niki Lauda track car. There's a lot more development to go for the T.50, however, and hopefully, GMA will keep the videos coming as the next prototypes start hitting the track and opening up the engine more.
