Watch A Porsche Taycan Race A DeLorean To 88 MPH Using 1.21 Gigawatts

This is how Porsche celebrates Back to the Future day.

If you're a fan of 1980s science fiction films, you'll know that October 21 is Back to the Future Day. That's because this is the date Marty McFly and Doc Brown time-traveled to the year 2015 inBack to the Future IIwith the iconicDeLorean time machine.

In the 1989 film, the time-traveling DeLorean required 1.21 gigawatts of power to run. Just in time for Back to the Future Day, Porsche is celebrating theElectrify Americaand European Ionity charging networks exceeding 1.21 gigawatts of combined power for the first time. Doc Brown would be proud.

"Not so long ago, harnessing 1.21 gigawatts meant a trip Back to the Future. Today, harnessing 1.21 gigawatts is a little less fraught and a lot more practical, being contained within a rapidly expanding network of chargers readily available to thePorsche Taycan," said Porsche.

To celebrate this milestone, Porsche has released a special film starring the Taycan taking on a DeLorean time machine, racing to 88 mph and beyond. The lighthearted film highlights how much easier it is to charge up the Taycan than the DeLorean time machine, which required a bolt of lightning. Back to the Future Fans may also notice a cool little easter egg in the film.

Driving the Porsche Taycan is actor Donald Fullilove who played the character of Goldie Wilson, a character in 1985'sBack to the Futurewho became the mayor of Hill Valley after being inspired by Marty McFly.

Currently, there are 670 Electrify America and 372 Ionity charging stations, with more than 4,800 individual chargers. Thanks to its 800-volt battery architecture and 270 kW charge speed, the Porsche Taycan can be charged from five to 80 percent in just 22 minutes, meaning "less time spent charging and more time traveling." For added convenience, both networks support Plug-and-Charge, enabling the owner to conveniently start charging the Taycan automatically when it's plugged in. Porsche Taycan owners also benefit from 30 minutes of free charging for three years.
