It all started when a police helicopter caught the Challenger doing donuts at an intersection.

With the streets deserted during the pandemic, there was a massivestreet racing spike. The practice hasalways been a big problem in Detroit, but it's now worse than ever. To combat street racers, police are cracking downby enforcing tougher punishments and permanently seizing cars.

In this incident, the Detroit Police enlisted the help of the Michigan State Police to catch a group of street racers in the act. Captured on a night vision camera, a police helicopter spotted aDodge Challengerdoing donuts at an intersection. The heat-sensitive camera even captured the trail of hot tire tracks covering the road. When police arrived at the scene, the Dodge Challenger driver took off and a wild chase ensued.

While the Dodge Challenger is a quick getaway car, it's also very thirsty. Since the driver clearly had their right foot welded to the accelerator, it didn't take long for it to start running out of gas. It isn't clear which version of the Challenger was used in the pursuit, but in its 707-hp SRT Hellcat guise the Challenger has a dismal fuel economy rating of 16 mpg combined, so they were never going to get very far. After evading the police, the driver stops at a gas station and desperately tries to fill the car up, but police soon catch up and surround the car.

The driver flees the scene, smashing into one of the patrol cars as they leave the gas station. After joining a freeway, the Challenger pulls ahead of the police, but the chopper continues tracking the speeding muscle car. Suddenly, the Challenger runs out of gas and comes to a halt on the freeway.

All three suspects can be seen bailing out and running across multiple lanes of the freeway, but the chopper continued tracking them. Two of the suspects were taken into custody, but police are still trying to track the third suspect down. "We have to thank the suspects for their help in getting caught," the MSP said in a tweet.
