Police departments have submitted some incredible designs

Each year, the American Association of State Troopers (AAST) hands out a Best Looking Cruiser award. The contest is open to state law enforcement agencies across the US that submit a photo for the annual contest. The winning photo of a police cruiser will become the feature image on the cover of AAST's 2023 wall calendar. Browsing through the submissions for this year, it's clear some photos are taken by officers but others are obviously by professional photographers.

An example of an amateur shot is from Florida Highway Patrol taken on the island community of Marathon in the Florida Keys. An example of a professional image and either photoshop skills or dropping some serious budget on using a helicopter in a shot comes from the Alaska State Troopers.

Voting for the Best Looking Cruiser award runs now until August 25. Last year, the Kentucky State Police took first place with 77,944 votes. The Ohio State Highway Patrol missed the top slot to come in second place with 65,529 votes.

As you would imagine, the majority of entries are of Dodge ChargersandFord Explorercruisers due to their popularity with law enforcement. However, Kansas Highway Patrol is showing off a Dodge Challenger, Georgia State Patrol has both a Dodge Challenger and Chevrolet Camaro, and the South Dakota Highway Patrol has a Ford Mustang. Despite the rise ofelectric vehicles being used by police departments, zero departments have submitted an EV here, though.

As wasteful as going to great lengths to take photos of police cruisers might appear to be for tax dollars, the AAST is a non-profit organization that provides educational scholarships to dependents of member troopers and benefits like wellness and bereavement.

Our favorite photos are the ones that show off the state environment as well as the vehicles, with Utah Highway Patrol's shot on a salt flat being particularly spectacular. Mississippi Highway Patrol reminds us the state has beautiful beaches, and Colorado State Patrol reminds us that it has incredible mountains and rock formations as a backdrop for its best cop car submission.
