Video: Watch How The GMC Sierra Is Made

Trucks /Comments

Take a virtual tour of the GM pickup truck's production process.

Last week, we looked at theinner workings of the Ferrari factoryin Maranello and discovered what it takes to create the world's finest supercars, but now it's time to look at the production process of an entirely different beast: theGMC Sierra 1500pickup.

To create one of the toughest and most capable trucks on sale today, GM leaves nothing to chance. Each Sierra begins life as metal sheets that are pressed and welded together by sophisticated robots. After this, spot welding and brazing are carried out to join the various panels and increase torsional rigidity and stiffness.

Robotic arms equipped with a laser compare the manufactured component to the geometry of the virtual design to ensure it has no flaws. The various parts, such as the doors, tailgate, and hood, are fitted to the body. Now, the shell is ready for the painting process.

之前在闪亮的漆涂层,豪ver, the body is treated to electrocoating, which helps with corrosion protection, among other things. Once covered with primer, the frame and body parts are sprayed and sent off to be mounted on their chassis'.

This marriage sees the truck bed and body become one with the ladder frame. Owing to the body-on-frame setup, the suspension and brakes are placed on the chassis first, with hordes of employees installing the necessary parts quickly and efficiently. Depending on the chosen engine, a turbocharged 2.7-liter, 3.0-liter Duramax diesel, or naturally-aspirated 5.3- or 6.2-liter V8 is fitted to the chassis. There are two different transmissions: an eight-speed and a 10-speed automatic.

While this is going on, the body slowly starts to take shape. Special robots made by Japanese company Fanuc position the body over the chassis, carefully lowering it with great precision. These machines then join the two structures together.

Once this crucial process is completed, the side steps and windscreen can be fitted to the Sierra. The production line moves along at a glacial pace, giving workers enough time to complete their tasks and check for any issues.

The video could prove interesting if you're into trucks or just curious about the vehicle manufacturing process in general. It also gives us a brief look at how Toyota and Nissan build their respective pickups.

The Sierra is considered a slightly more upmarket version of theChevrolet Silverado 1500, with which it shares its engines and GM T1XX platform. At the top of the rangesits the Denali Ultimate, a luxury car masquerading as a truck. Yes, it can do everything you expect of a full-size pickup, but the innards are filled with the latest technology, soft leather, and fine wood trim.

Soon, the fully-electric Sierra EVwill hit dealership floors with as much as 754 horsepower and 400 miles of range, but that vehicle's production process will be vastly different.
