Verstappen Wins Qatar Grand Prix, But McLaren Stole The Show

Formula One /1 Comment

卡塔尔大Prix was so intense that drivers became physically ill, with some of them forced to retire from the race.

If you were wondering whether Max Verstappen was going to take his foot off the throttle afterwinning his third world championship on Saturday, the answer is no. Verstappen made it clear to the rest of the field that they would have to battle even harder if they want to claim one of the five remaining Grands Prix. Verstappen dominated the Qatar Grand Prix with another clean sweep, taking pole, first place, and setting the fastest lap in a grueling race that saw Logan Sargeant retire due to dehydration and Esteban Ocon throw up in his helmet due to the conditions.

Most of the action was behind Verstappen, but he still managed some impressive feats. He has now led the most laps during a season (739) with five remaining races. He also now has the second-longest points-scoring streak in the history of F1 (36), with Hamilton leading this stat with 48. Most impressive of all is Verstappen's points margin. He's currently leading by more than 200 points, easily beating the 155-point record set by Sebastian Vettel in 2013.

With Verstappen's achievements out of the way, we can focus on all of the glorious stuff that went on behind the champion. Even though Red Bull is already the 2023 car-building champion, McLaren was arguably a better team on the day. It set a new record for the fastest pit stop ever recorded at 1.8 seconds when Lando Norris went in for a tire swap.

Aside from that impressive feat, both McLaren drivers were on fire. Hamilton took himself out of the race after a rather rookie-like accident with his teammate, opening the door for McLaren to score maximum points. It took some work, however. Oscar Piastri qualified in sixth, and Lando Norris was way down in tenth. Piastri battled himself up to second for the first time, while Norris finished third.

We also have to applaud George Russell. After the severe contact with his teammate going into the first corner, he had to pit on the second lap, dropping him down to 18th. He battled through the field to fourth, scoring some much-needed points for Mercedes-AMG.

Sinceboth championships have already been won, drivers and teams are now competing for second, and it's much closer than you'd think. Mercedes is in second place with 326 points, and despite a chaotic season, Ferrari is third, just 28 points behind. One good weekend for Ferrari, and they'll overtake Mercedes. And as Hamilton and Russell have proved on more than one occasion this season, they can take a giant number two in the sheets.

McLaren is in fifth, but it looks dead sure to take fourth away from Aston Martin at COTA in two weeks. McLaren is a mere 11 points behind Aston Martin, which started strong but has since floundered and is operating with one arm tied behind its back due to Lance Stroll's inability to put in a strong performance.

There's a theoretical maximum of 245 points available to a team if they can max out the scoring opportunities, so McLaren could climb even higher if it continues its current form.

Second place in the Drivers' Championship is still wide open, with 146 points available and Sergio Perez still in second (224 points). Lewis Hamilton is closest, 30 points behind Perez, and given Perez's performances lately, the seven-time champ may just catch and overtake him.

汉密尔顿的背后,阿隆索,赢面,勒克莱尔,nd Lando. Norris' seventh spot isn't a true reflection of McLaren's current pace, but we feel it's too late in the season for him to mount a challenge for a top-three spot. But who knows, if he can, maybe he'll get a special-editionMcLaren 750Snamed after himself.

He's already well on his way to beating his career best of sixth place in 2021. As an added bonus, Norris and Piastri's podium finishes took McLaren to the magical 500 podiums.

Next up is the second US Grand Prix, this one taking place at COTA in Texas on the weekend of 20-22 Oct.
