Toyota Unveils Electric Truck To Take On The Ford Maverick

It's billed as midsize, but it's closer to the hot-selling Maverick in terms of size.

Apart from theall-electric Land Cruiser Se Concept, Toyota has also unveiled a truck BEV concept called EPU. It's billed to be a five-seater midsize pickup, but its compact nature and proportion tell us it's the long-rumored challenger to the Ford Maverick's dominance.

While still a concept, Toyota has hinted heavily that the EPU represents its next-generation battery-powered trucks. The automaker didn't go nitty-gritty with details, but it has divulged enough for us to know where it's positioned in the sea of truck options in the market.

Despite being called a midsize pickup, the EPU is visually and numerically minute. It only measures 199.6 inches long, 75.2 inches wide, and 67.3 inches tall - numbers short of theToyota Tacoma. Even its 120-inch wheelbase come short of the Taco.

The Toyota EPU electric truck concept is close to the size of thehot-selling Ford Maverickand Hyundai Santa Cruz. Its proportions are close to the Blue Oval compact truck; the massive dual-cab eats up most of the length, compromising the cargo space behind the cabin. That said, the EPU is a lifestyle truck rather than a full-blown hauler, reflected in the imagery that came with the press release.

Be that as it may, Toyota showcases its ingenuity by adding a folding tailgate that can serve as an extension to the rather short bed. The automaker also claims that its monocoque body allows for a "versatile deck space that caters to a broader range of user applications."

Inside, the front row features a minimalist design with a two-screen affair and a yoke-style steering wheel found in the Lexus RZ. There are plenty of storage points, too.

虽然没有显示,丰田吹捧,rear of the cabin is linked to the bed, which can be used depending on preference and outdoor activities. And, as a monocoque pickup, Toyota claims its low center of gravity promotes "superior handling stability and ride comfort." Promising words from the brand, but we'll see about that when this truck goes into production.

Rumors about aFord Maverick-rivaling Toyota truckhave been around since last year, and this is our first look at it, albeit in concept form. We'll know more about the EPU when it debuts in the metal at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show next week. Hopefully, we'll get more powertrain and battery details then.
