Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Gets Significant Upgrade Down Under

Along with the introduction of the all-new 2024Land Cruiser, Toyota also announced upgrades to the iconic Land Cruiser 70 Series. The 70 is not destined for the USA, so add it to thef的列表orbidden fruit. At least we can look across the pond to Australia to see what their ultimate off-roader is getting.

For the first time, the 70 Series will be sold with a four-cylinder powertrain, much like the Land Cruiser heading to the USA. But instead of replacing the equally iconic 4.5-liter V8 turbodiesel, the 2.8-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel model will be sold alongside the older engine.

So why keep the old engine around? The answer is quite simple, actually. First, the V8 is only available with a five-speed manual gearbox, while the four-pot is available exclusively with a six-speed automatic transmission.

For the first time ever, Toyota is adding some civility to the LC70. This is the most luxurious this agricultural model has ever been since Toyota split the Land Cruiser brand in two so it could compete as a workhorse and a luxury off-road rival to the Range Rover.

The second reason is to keep the peace. If you think Toyota's US fanbase is loyal, you haven't met the farmers in Australia and Africa. They will literally drive their LC70s through the ocean (they'll find a snorkel long enough) and deliver a full load of the stinkiest manure to Koji Sato's doorstep.

That being said, the 2.8-liter will likely be the big seller. The automatic gearbox will be a significant improvement over the notchy five-speed that has a first and fifth gear located in different time zones. Toyota's V8 will live on in the background for those who refuse to accept evolution.

The automatic gearbox is not the only concession made in the name of comfort. Toyota also redesigned the instrument cluster with a 4.2-inch multi-information display and the center console with a 6.7-inch touchscreen that is both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatible.

On the safety side, the LC70 now has lane departure alert, road sign assist, and automatic high beams, and the fuses for all these will be pulled as soon as the truck leaves the dealership floor. Toyota didn't mention more powerful brakes, which is what the LC70 really needs. It's the number one aftermarket upgrade made to these things.

The body is the same, but Toyota has given it a revamped front end with lights similar to those found on the classic Land Cruiser 40 Series. It's still very much function over form, as it should be. It hasworked for more than 70 years, so why change it?

It's available as a single cab, crew cab, and wagon. There are various trims available, ranging from bleak to nearly comfortable. These things certainly wouldn't live up to the accepted standard of comfort in the USA.

Still, it does have an old-school charm, and if you have to cover 1,000 miles a day on the toughest roads imaginable, there's nothing else like it. If it were sold in the USA, it would definitely feature on our list of thebest factory off-roaders available.
