Toyota Estimates The Land Cruiser Has Better Fuel Economy Than The Ford Bronco

Made possible by its i-Force Max turbocharged 2.4-liter hybrid engine.

Toyota rolled out the 2024 Land Cruiser's manufacturer-estimated combined fuel economy, which looks promising for the SUV. Toyota USA's official website shows the newland Cruisercan register a 27 combined MPG rating. Take note that this isn't EPA-rated yet.

The said rating is impressive for a vehicle of its size. For reference, we will compare it to the EPA-rated fuel efficiency rating ofrivals Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler. The former has an EPA-rated combined fuel economy of 17 MPG, while the latter's 4xe PHEV version can do 20 MPG when running on gasoline only and 49 MPGe when the electric powertrain is involved.

Part of the remarkable fuel efficiency is the use of a hybrid powertrain. To be more specific, the Land Cruiser is exclusively powered by an i-Force Max turbocharged 2.4-liter hybrid engine, which is also found in theTacoma. The gas-guzzling V8 from the previous generation has been dropped from the range.

The engine may be down by four cylinders but the automaker managed to increase the torque by 64 lb-ft. It also produces maximum torque from a lowly 1,700 rpm, which should give drivers more confidence when going for an off-road crawl. When combined, the hybrid powertrain can generate 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque.

Aside from fuel-efficient advantages, the new engine should also help reduce the SUV's carbon emissions. Toyota is reportedly already looking to take it up a notch byelectrifying the new Land Cruiser- a plug-in hybrid, fully electric, andhydrogen fuel cell-poweredvariants are considered.

land Cruiser chief engineer Keita Moritsu said each powertrain option has "difficult points and merit points" so the team needs to carefully examine the options. The TNGA-F platform that underpins the Land Cruiser will be altered to make it more environmentally friendly, and hopefully, more efficient in the future.

No official price has been disclosed just yet but Toyota expects the SUV to start in the mid-$50,000 range. The model will be built in Japan and will arrive in North America in the spring of 2024.
