These Are The Names Of Volkswagen's New Models

Patents and Trademarks /2 Comments

One even points to a new pickup truck.

Volkswagen has filed several trademarks with the German Patent and Trademark Office, pointing toward the name of as many as five upcoming models.CarBuzzdiscovered the trademark applications for Tivas, Tyber, Therion, Teria, Tarokko, andTaroko. In each case, the filings were made under categories (Nice classification) 12, 28, 35, and 37. These categories cover vehicles, games, toys, video games, advertising, and construction vehicles. There's nothing unusual with filing in these categories, as VW is simply ensuring that another manufacturer can't use a vehicle's likeness without paying licensing fees.

Only two of the trademark applications are vaguely familiar; Tarokko and Taroko. Volkswagen stunned the world with theTarok pickup truck conceptin 2018, but it never went into production. With the compact pickup truck segment getting more competitive by the day, VW might have changed its mind, and the name of the car.

Why ditch the Tarok nomenclature? Well, because it's dumb. Tarok is a card game that dates back to the Renaissance, though it's still played these days with Tarot cards. But adding an "o" totally changes the meaning. It's most likely a reference to the Taroko National Park in China. The word also translates to "beautiful" in the language of an indigenous group that used to live in the region. VW likely filed for Tarokko, just in case Taroko gets shot down because it already belongs to the famous national park.

Is VW prepping to build a small pickup? It arguably already has everything in place, thanks to its partnership with Ford. Theall-new Amarokis a Ford Ranger with a more elegant exterior, built alongside the latter in South Africa. The question is whether Ford would give VW access to the highly successful Maverick.

南美Saveiro皮卡to be replaced, and the partnership with Ford could cut costs drastically. And as we know, VW is on acost-cutting mission.

If VW follows its standard naming convention, the rest of the names have been filed for crossovers and SUVs. The names of these models always start with a T. There are some exceptions, like the Atlas, called the Teramont in other parts of the world. Examples include Tiguan, Touareg, Taos, Tavendor, T-Cross, and Tharu.

We also know that VW uses several sources for inspiration, including wind (Passat, Polo, and Scirocco), Latin (Arteon), and Greek mythology (Eos, Atlas, and Phaeton.)

According to our research,Tivasmeans nothing. It's commonly used as an acronym for Totally Implantable Venous Access System, though we can't see VW naming a car after a device used for blood transfusions.Tyberis a commonly used name for boys and essentially an alternative spelling for Tiber. The Tiber is a river named after the Greek god Tiberinus.

Therionis the most aggressive of all these names. It's Greek for a wild animal or beats, but it can also refer to the name the ancient Greeks gave to the constellation we now call Lupus. If VW builds an SUV with the full 1,700 horsepower the newScalable Systems Platformcan provide, this is the name it should use.

Teriahas several meanings. In Austria, it's a common name that means "freedom and joy." Most of us know it as a suffix, which usually indicates a self-service establishment, like a cafeteria.

Can we expect all of these names to feature on cars shortly? Some seem likely, but there's a better chance VW is scooping up all the cool-sounding words that start with a T. Once it goes fully electric, it will likely drop the ID naming strategy and revert back to regular car names. The next-generationID.4could be called a Tyber, for example.

我们认为Tarokko和太鲁阁名称有种种折磨ntial, however. VW can either use its partnership with Ford or share with another manufacturer within the VW Group. We know Scout is working on a compact electric pickup...
