Sources note that the newcomer will be powered by a pair of familiar engines.
Known internally as the S650, the all-newFord Mustangis one eagerly awaited muscle car. We've caught glimpses of the newcomer traipsing around Dearborn, albeitcloaked in heavy disguise. In April, a leaked image of the Mustang'snew face surfaced on the internetand, while the styling doesn't deviate much from the current model, there's no denying it looks far fresher and modern than before.
So far, we know that the seventh iteration of the Mustang willeventually gain hybrid powertrains- expect both the 2.3-liter four-cylinder and 5.0-liter V8 to sport the technology. However, it seems the new model won't be introduced with these engines. In fact, according to recent reports, the S650 will debut with the current generation's engine options: the EcoBoost inline-four and the Coyote V8.
Alas, we're still in the dark with regards to performance and power figures. The current models produce 310 and 450-horsepower, respectively, so we don't anticipate anything less for the upcoming Mustang. While this may come as a disappointment to those hoping to get their hands on the latest variant, it's great to know the naturally-aspirated V8 will live on for some time to come.
Naturally, the hybrid models will produce more power but it's unclear as to whether they will replace the current crop of engines. Certainly, the new hybridized engines will be more efficient - an important part of Ford's eco-friendly ambitions. We know that the Blue Oval is experimenting with hydrogen technology too, which has the potential to extend the lifespan of the V8 engine but we'd bet on a fully electric derivative arriving first.
Whether there's a market for an electric muscle car remains to be seen, but the battery-powered Mustangwill reportedly arrive by 2028. Many muscle car aficionados may lament the lack of a V8 powertrain under the hood but, based on Ford's current success with EV products, it could prove to be a strong seller. While the Blue Oval has remained tight-lipped regarding the S650, we can expect to see it arrive in 2023 as a 2024 model.
The Mustang is set to grow even stronger in its latest guise, and we do not doubt that it will appeal to loyal owners - especially seeing as the V8 will remain for now. The hybrid V8 should prove to be something truly special though, and will likely produce plenty of powerwhile improving gas mileage, too. As for the high-performance derivatives, we cannot wait to see what the company has up its sleeve.
