Tesla And Polestar Fighting To Be Your Hertz Rental Car

Electric Vehicles /2 Comments

Soon you'll be able to rent both of these EVs through Hertz.

Just a few months back, Tesla was inthe middle of signing a deal with Hertz. The rental car company is broadening its selection to include greener cars, and as of now, you can go to Hertz's site and reserve aTesla Model 3. Soon, you'll be able to do the same with a Polestar 2. It seems that Tesla and Polestar won't just be competing for potential buyers' attention now.

Polestar's new global partnership with Hertz includes purchasing up to 65,000 Polestar EVs over five years. The Swedish EV brand also stated that availability for these new Hertz/Polestar cars will come to Europe by spring this year, with North American and Australian cars coming in "late 2022."

Hertz said that it hopes the new partnership with Tesla will help them "become a leading participant in the modern mobility ecosystem." Additionally, Hertz CEO Stephen Scherr said that the brand hopes to accelerate the adoption of EVs while simultaneously giving its customers a "premium EV product." Despite near-crippling bankruptcy, Hertz thinks its customers will pay for a "premium EV product." The move is a bit of a gamble, with Hertz trying something new rather than sticking to the cars that traditionally make them money.

Of course, it isn't just Hertz that this is good for. Polestar is getting to sell 65,000 cars in five years, after all. The brand recently shared that it almost tripled sales volumes in 2021, and the Hertz deal will be a nice boost to those figures in the future.

Interestingly, Polestar says that "Hertz will initially orderPolestar 2." To us at least, it sounds like we can expect future Polestar models, like theupcoming Polestar 3, to show up in Hertz lots.

We see this move doing a lot for the public perception of electric cars. People rent stuff they wouldn't normally buy all the time. Why else do you think Hertz will loan you a Mustang GT? If folks are able to go out and try something "foreign" to them like an EV, there's a chance they'll end up with one in the driveway. It'll be interesting to see how all this plays out, especially with both Tesla and Polestar now competing for Hertz customers' attention.
