TEASED: The Mercedes-Benz Mythos SL Will Be One Beautiful Roadster

Teaser /1 Comment

The flying buttresses hark back to the legendary 300 SLR racer.

Save for the last generation, theMercedes-Benz SL-Classhas always represented what the Three-pointed star has been about: impeccable quality, fastidious attention to detail, and superb cruising abilities wrapped up in a glamorous package. The latest iterationis a return to formand, for the first time in two decades, sports a soft-top.

This has allowed for sleek styling which harks back to SL models of old, but it seems Mercedes isn't done tweaking the formula just yet. Chief Design Officer Gorden Wagener has taken to Instagram to tease a special Mythos variant of the iconic roadster and, boy, is it a looker.

While the teaser doesn't reveal much, we can see the overall shape of the SL has been retained, save for the dramatic-looking flying buttresses. This speedster-esque look harks back to the 300 SLR 722once piloted by Stirling Moss.

Sadly, not much else can be seen, save for the particularly striking paintwork. The rich hue reflects light in the same way the now-discontinued Alubeam silver once did. This distinctive color could also be a tribute to Mercedes legends of years gone by; the brand's racers became synonymous with the lustrous shade, earning them the "Silver Arrow" nickname.

With regards to the Mythos name, the new model won't just be a common or garden special edition. The German automaker recentlyannounced it will rejig its lineup. The three categories will now comprise Entry Luxury, Core Luxury, and Top-End Luxury.

Mythos will fall firmly in the third camp and, according to Mercedes-Benz, will be even more exclusive than the already-posh Maybach models. With that in mind, it's fair to assume the Mythos models will be quite spectacular.

Perhaps they won't rival the Maybach range in terms of outright luxury, but we presume they will be marketed as ultra-rare and collectible cars, in the same vein as Lamborghini's Limited Series or McLaren's Special Operations division.

It's not the only upper-crust SL to be teased by the company's design guru in recent days. TheConcept Mercedes-Maybach SL teaser, pictured below, provided us with a glimpse into the ultra-luxury SL variant set to cater to the luxury-loving crowd. The advent of the plush SL will likely fill the gap left by the discontinued S-Class Cabriolet.

While little is known about both the Mythos and Maybach SL models, we expect the former to be more sporting and focused. The latter will be more adept at coastal cruising. One thing's for certain - they'll carry hefty price tags. Our European counterparts are expected to shell out the equivalent of $125,000 for the base-spec SL 43.
