Based on Kia's research, millennials consider their electric SUV interiors as being an additional "room" to live in and not merely a place to get from A to B. The 'Bold for Nature' design pillar that aims to harmonize nature and man-made elements served as inspiration for the designers. Kia touts impeccable finishes and a relaxing ambiance as two of the cabin's many attributes.

The clean dashboard features dual screens above neatly integrated ventilation outlets and a row of physical controls for the climate control. The front passenger seat extends to an upholstered center section that almost forms a complete front bench, one of the choices that creates the lounge-like, open atmosphere. We also noted a full-length panoramic sunroof and a second seating row that folds flat, boosting versatility.

The connected car Navigation & Cockpit (ccNC) and heater controls have been integrated, while Kia says lighting plays an especially important role. Mood lighting has ten brightness levels, ten curated shades, and up to 64 total colors. The mood lighting is linked to the driving mode, dims in low light environments, and can alert the driver if they exceed the speed limit. It sounds similar to theInteraction Bar in the new BMW 7 Seriesthat isn't just decorative but also linked to various systems.

Four main interior colors and five seat pattern options are available, including two woven options and artificial leather for the base derivative.

No technical details about the powertrain were shared, but earlier reports from China suggest that a single-motor model will produce 215 horsepower and 229 lb-ft of torque, enabling a top speed of 115 mph. That's the same power figure as the base rear-wheel-drive EV9. Global models are expected to have a Lithium-Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt-Oxide (NMC) battery with a range of 372 miles.

As for availability, Kia is launching the EV5 later this year in China. More information will be announced at the Kia EV Day in October, and possibly the on-sale date for global markets. Its arrival in the USA isn't confirmed, but we can't see Kia not releasing a competitor in the bustling compact electric crossover segment, especially as it willstart EV production in this country in 2025. Kia already sells the EV6 here, but that car's styling is very different from the upright, more obviously SUV style of the EV5.
