Ram Confirms When Its First EV Truck Will Arrive

Teaser /7 Comments

But it won't go on sale for a while.

At this year's New York Auto Show, Ram Trucks boss Mike Koval hinted that his company wouldshow off its first electric pickup truckwell before the on-sale date in 2024. While showing off a new model before it arrives at dealerships isn't exactly an unheard of practice, Koval seemed adamant that there'd be something more to show before the end of this year. As a reminder, Ram has onlyteased a few images of the electric truck, none of which depict anything more than a rendering. But that will soon change.

In a new teaser video shared to the Ram Trucks official Twitter page, the company once again showed off the futuristic front end of the upcoming2024 Ram 1500 EV. This is nothing we haven't seen before, but this time the video came with a rough reveal date. "Time to steal some thunder. Unleashing Fall 2022," the caption reads.

The first half of that caption, "time to steal some thunder," seems like an obvious reference to one of the Ram EV's chief competitors, theFord F-150 Lightning. Ram and Ford have a history of taking small digs at each other, like the image of a tyrannosaurus rex eating a raptor under the hood of the Ram 1500 TRX. The second half of the post, "unleashing Fall 2022," confirms what we expected; Ram will show off its EV truck (or at least a concept version) later this year. With the truck not set to go on sale for two more years, it's unclear what specifications (if any) will be provided at the Fall debut.

Ram also failed to provide an official reveal date. "Fall 2022" is quite vague, meaning the truck could be revealed on any date from September 22 to December 23, but least we have a rough estimate of when the Ram 1500 EV will arrive. When it goes on sale, the F-150 Lightning will already have two years of sales under its belt, and GM will have two electric trucks, the Silverado EV and Hummer EV. Tesla hopes its Cybertruck will be on sale by then too, but with no production timetable given, it's impossible to know when it will show up.

We'll see if the Ram'sgasoline range extenderwill make buyers hold off on buying the Ford and GM options.
