Polestar Thinks It's A Porsche Rival

There's currently just one Polestar model on sale right now, thePolestar 2. This won't last much longer. The Polestar 3, Polestar 4, and Precept are all on the way. By 2025, the electric-only brand will have acomplete lineup available. Volvo, which recently increased its stake in Polestar to49.5 percent, will be EV-only by 2030, but Polestar will be the brand for enthusiasts. That said, who does it have in its crosshairs? That'd be Porsche.

Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath told Germany'sAuto, Motor, und Sportclarified the long-established brand is its target. "We are competing with Porsche for the best electrically powered premium sports car." Porsche's only EV right now is the Taycan, but a fully electrified Macan is due next year. Following that, the next-generation 718 Boxster/Cayman will get the full battery treatment. Ingenlath made no mention of a potential sports car, unfortunately.

The good news is that Polestar could use a new halo model now that the Polestar 1 has been discontinued. But probably before that could happen, Polestar has another huge goal to achieve: carbon neutrality. The current plan, called Project 0, calls for all of its models to be climate neutral by 2030.

"Electric cars are not environmentally friendly per se," said Ingenlath. "But electric cars pave the way to a clean planet." Thing is, all Polestar production currently takes place in China and shipping vehicles to all parts of the globe also contributes to global warming. How could this be changed? The CEO suggested that shipping cars to Germany via rail lines is being considered.

Before Polestar can make a potential dent into Porsche's sales, another key thing must be accomplished: luring premium vehicle buyers away from combustion-engined vehicles.

Ingenlath is confident this will happen soon, and when it does Polestar needs to be ready. "Good customer service is important, and we have to take the issue even more into our own hands," he said. "We have to be there at all times if there are any questions about the delivery status or, for example, the software. We will also increase the number of service points."
