One-Off Rolls-Royce Phantom Is A Celebration Of Carbon Fiber

Luxury /Comments

Lightweight materials and luxury don't often go together, but Rolls-Royce makes it work.

Purchasing aRolls-Royce Phantomis a truly special experience. Not only do you gain access to what is, arguably, the world's finest luxury car, but you're also privy to the company's incredible Bespoke service. It's hard to improve on perfection but, time and time again, the craftsmen in Goodwood show us it can be done. Previously, the companycreated a special, Orchid-inspired Phantomfor a very special Singapore-based customer.

Now Rolls-Royce of Dubai has unveiled yet another special Phantom, replete with a very special Carbon Veil Gallery. Situated in the luxury sedan's Phantom Gallery are 150 carbon sheets. Under the skillful guidance of legendary sculptor Alastair Gibson, the sheets are put together with resin and compressed to form a solid piece of carbon fiber. Rolls-Royce says the addition lends a "highly contemporary note to Phantom's interior."

Monied clients can choose between a clear or matte lacquer, which both bring out the infamous weave pattern in a unique way. This treatment also prevents discoloration and protects the artwork from harsh sunshine. "The main challenge in creating the shape was ensuring that the weave of the carbon fiber remained horizontal and parallel throughout. It had to be perfect - because this is a Rolls-Royce," said Gibson.

But the 116-year-old brand doesn't do anything in half measures. To that end, the entire Phantom was customized to celebrate the artwork it is built around. The exterior is quietly elegant, painted in a Gunmetal gray with an iced finish. The hood is treated to a contrasting gray, while a subtle Mandarin Orange coach- and waftline span the length of the motorcar. A nice touch is the Spirit of Ecstasy, custom-made in carbon fiber. A Black Pack removes most of the exterior chrome elements, lending the Rolls an understated presence.

The interior is a work of art itself. The anthracite-colored bright work teams well with the creamy white upholstery which, says the carmaker, accent the Veil Gallery beautifully. Other delightful touches include the Starlight Headliner and orange stitching and piping found on the seats and dashboard. Reputedly, the carbon fiber sculpture was inspired by the 118 WallyPower, a super-luxury yacht.

"Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Dubai is accustomed to innovative artforms, and the new Carbon Veil is an exquisite addition to the Phantom Gallery...[It] is genuinely ground-breaking; the result is ultra-stylish, contemporary and beautiful, and perfectly attuned to the aesthetic sensibilities of the Emirate of Dubai," remarked Mamdouh Khairallah of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Dubai.

The British brand may be the last word in luxury, but it isn't the only automaker to offer a bespoke service such as this. Earlier this month, Bentleypreviewed the Bentayga Speed Space Edition, a unique one-off creation from the extraordinary穆力纳部门. While a touch ostentatious compared to the Rolls, there's no denying both are truly special vehicles.
