Designers sketched old Bugatti models directly onto the paint and painted directly onto the cabin's leather.

BeforeAchim Anscheidtstepped down as Bugatti Design Director recently, he had a hand in the creation of the most bespoke Bugatti ever made: the Chiron Super Sport 'Golden Era.'

"Our customers can be incredibly creative and we take great pride in helping them realize what they dream of, but extensive special commissions such as this are exceedingly rare - we usually see no more than one or two creations on this scale each year," said Anscheidt, adding that the resulting car "is probably the most demanding piece of tailored personalization work that my team and I have ever worked on."

As you can probably guess, this one-of-one created by theSur Mesure departmentis more than just aChiron Super Sportdressed in gold paint.

Anscheidt explains that a very important customer said that he felt the Chiron Super Sport and its W16 engine "represented a landmark moment in the world of the automobile," and he wanted a unique way of celebrating. Together with the customer, Bugatti looked back through its history to find more such landmark moments. They identified the times of Ettore Bugatti, Jean Bugatti, and Roland Bugatti as the brand's first golden era. The modern-day Bugatti from 1987 was another special time.

"Our team proposed a concept featuring 45 sketches of the brand's icons that would be hand-drawn directly onto the car itself, and the owner immediately fell in love with the idea," said Anscheidt. "The implementation may sound quite straightforward, but achieving a perfect finish, and one that would last the test of time, took more patience and craftsmanship than you could ever imagine."

On the passenger side of the car, 26 hand-drawn sketches depict the Type 41 Royale from 1926, the Type 57 SC Atlantic, and more. The driver's side shows 19 sketches portraying the "rebirth and enduring success of Bugatti since 1987," depicting the EB110, the Veyron, and the Chiron. Of course, the W16 must feature too, and this is expressed as a simplification of the 3,712 individual parts used to construct it.

The sketching alone took over 400 hours, and it was done using the same pens Bugatti uses for sketching on paper for the sake of authenticity. As you'd expect, Bugatti had to develop a new finishing process to make this work by hand.

But that was only one part of the masterpiece. Bugatti had to come up with a bespoke color, so it created a shade of gold named Dore and applied it to the car with a gradient color split into a special metallic interpretation of Nocturne Black.

Inside, each door panel shows off three Bugatti icons, with these hand-applied using bespoke paint and a fine brush that allowed the team to paint directly on the leather. As with the exterior, one side depicts the EB110, the Veyron, and the Chiron, while the other side shows the Type 35, the Type 57 SC Atlantic, and the Type 41 Royale.

Golden Era stitching matches the underside of the rear wing, and hand-written 'One-of-One' motifs further elevate the luxury feel.

This stunning project is among the last to be associated with the Chiron project as Bugatti heads into a new era. Anew design bosshas arrived, and the Chiron replacement isnearly ready.
