Offroad Truck Battle: 1937 Ford Megatruck Vs. Chevy Silverado Prerunner

They tackled a parallel off-road track with incredible jumps.

What happens when a methanol Megatruck races a turbo LS-poweredChevy SilveradoPrerunner on a dirt track with jumps? It's pure adrenaline-pumping fun. Sure, it isn't as fast as a typical drag race on tarmac, but the jumps and V8 noises more than make up for it.

The race featured in Hoonigan'sThis vs. Thatseries involves a classic 1937 Ford named "Flyboy," owned and built by Devin Villanueve from Canada. The ride is quite tall as it sits on massive 64-inch paddy tires inspired by agricultural spec tires.

It also has a solid axle setup that boasts 21 inches and a whopping 46 inches of wheel travel at the front and rear. It's equipped with a supercharged 548 Chevy V8, making 1,600 horsepower (on the flywheel) and a 20-ton differential from a crane. On top of that, the V8 uses methanol, the same fuel that the fastest piston-powered car, theSpeed Demon 715, uses.

In the other corner is a very clean-looking 2003 Prerunner built and owned by Kenny Falconer. This thing is far from the standard pickup truck, thanks to a full tube frame and a turbocharged 408 cubic-inch V8, making 615 wheel horsepower.

The Silverado is rear-wheel-drive only but has 26 inches of suspension travel at the front and 29 inches at the rear. It's actually quite close to acustom-built trophy truck.

Unsurprisingly, both vehicles sound fantastic. However, the taller, more powerful Ford showed faster acceleration from a standstill on the first run. On its way to the finish line, the vast vehicle also received air time courtesy of one of the track's bumps.

On the second run, the results were the same. The '37 Ford just had so much power and traction from the standstill start, allowing it to maintain a constant lead against the Prerunner.

But while the awesome Ford off-roader won both races, it paid the ultimate sacrifice by having a chunk of its engine block sheared off. It's unclear what caused the damage, but both contestants pushed their rides to the limits, especially on the second run, where both saw significant air time.

The race is filled with blood-pumping action, with commendable efforts from the two racers. Similar to theToyota GR Corolla versus Ford Mustang GT drag race, though, there is a hint of a mismatch. But at the end of the day, that might not even matter because everyone involved had some good ol' fun.
