下一代日产边境面临巨大的Delays

Sources say the current truck will soldier on until 2029.

Reports coming out of Nissan are saying that the next-generation前沿will be delayed two years until 2029 so the company can focus on ramping up EV production.Automotive Newsacquired a supplier memo that states this will be the case at the vehicle's Canton, Mississippi factory, which was confirmed by an unnamed source who confirmed the reason why. The delay is due to the company not wanting to cross wires as it focuses on Nissan and Infiniti electric vehicles.

Only having been introduced in 2022, the current Frontier has been a formidable competitor offering refinement, capability, and good looks at an affordable price. Given the previous model was on sale for a whopping 17 years, we imagine a couple more added onto this one won't be too much of an issue as long as it gets refreshed with things like anadvanced Mitsubishi-sourced 4WD system.

With the recent news that theTitan is to be axed, the Frontier will be Nissan's only truck on sale in the US, so the automaker can't afford to let it fall by the wayside.

We've been hearing rumors that thenext generation Frontier will be electrified, something that makes even more sense given this delay. Nissan Dealer Advisory Board Chairman Tyler Slade previously said that dealers are asking for an electric pickup, claiming it would help lower operating costs and make them more competitive.

News of a delay doesn't bode well for these hopes, as the unnamed source toldANthat Nissan doesn't want "a major model launch during the time that they're starting up [EV production]." Could this push Nissan behind its competitors? Or is it instead a prudent move to ensure the company gets the truck right out of the gate regardless of the consequences?

We're inclined to believe the latter, asCarBuzzspoke with Nissan executives earlier this year who said that the company's current electric technologyis not right for trucks yet. Speaking specifically of the e-Power hybrid powertrains currently available in foreign markets, Nissan doesn't think the technology can handle the rigors of towing and thus needs further work to be considered a viable option at all.

Plus, the company wants to make sure whatever truck it releases is priced aggressively. "They don't want to be in the Rivian or the Cybertruck space," Slade said. "They want to be in the affordable $40,000 range." With so many incentives out there today, the EV market is experiencing something of a price war. If the company delivers a full-electric truck that's too expensive and years late, it's over.

However, the possibility exists that with the longer lifespan of the current Frontier, we could see some sort of electrification by the end of its life cycle. Sharing the same platform as the Dongfeng Rich 6 EV pickup in China, Nissan has already shown the platform can be electrified with enough work.

While this is highly unlikely, it shows the versatility of the platform. More likely is that when the e-Power hybrid systems advance enough to be useful in trucks, we could see them dropped in the Frontier close to the end of its life in the same way Nissan dropped its current updated V6 into the previous generation Frontier.
