New Toyota Land Cruiser Reveals First Look At Retro Face

Teaser /2 Comments

The new Land Cruiser will debut next week.

The all-new Toyota Land Cruiser will debut next Tuesday, but it won't be the LC as we know it. Toyota shared a singular teaser image, revealing much more than the average automotive amuse-bouche. We can see the front of the new Land Cruiser from the side, parked in front of a post-facelift J60 LC.

The J60 is there as a hint for what to expect from the bits of the car we haven't seen yet. But we think the inspiration for the design has been hiding in plain sight all along, just like the Toyota Tacoma. More than a year before the Tacoma was introduced in May 2023, its near-production-ready body debuted when Lexus and Toyotashowcased 16 electric concepts.

This leads us to believe the new Land Cruiser will feature design DNA borrowed from the Compact Cruiser EV.

The front end of the new car certainly has similarities, and from the side, we can see two lighting elements within the headlight cluster. We're guessing, but willing to bet good money that Toyota will use LED daytime running lights to mimic the twin headlight design at the front of the facelifted J60.

If theCompact Cruiser EV conceptis the design inspiration behind the new Land Cruiser, it's safe to assume we might see more of the concept's cooler bits on the LC. The rear lights are pretty cool, and we certainly hope those white steelie-like alloys are at least offered as an optional extra.

As for power, those who believe there is no replacement for displacement might want to look away. Leaked documents show that variousfour-cylinder diesel and gas engineswill be available.

The US-bound model will likely be equipped with the same turbocharged 2.4-liter four-pot as the Tacoma. As a more high-end model, we expect the 326-horsepower i-Force Max version to be available. With 465 lb-ft of torque available from just 1,700 rpm, it's more fit for the task than the V8 used in the now-defunct big-body Land Cruiser.

The same leaked documents suggest that the "Prado" name will be dropped and that it will go by Land Cruiser 250, signifying that it's a step down from the Land Cruiser 300 sold in other parts of the world.

The J60 was the successor to the J50, the first Land Cruiser built to be rugged and comfortable. These earlier models were also more affordable than their natural rivals at the time, so, in a way, this new model is perhaps more traditional than many would like to believe.

Basically, there will now be three Land Cruisers, and the 250 will likely compete with the Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler. Where does that leave the来yota 4Runnerand Toyota Sequoia? We initially argued that there wasn't enough room for another new SUV built on the TNGA-F platform, but with retro styling and a legendary badge pasted to the rear, the Land Cruiser 250 will have some unique selling points. It was likely also relatively easy to develop, as nearly everything needed to build it already exists. Also, whichever one you buy, Toyota ends up with the cash.

For the record, Toyota split the Land Cruiser range before. The J60 was sold as a luxury vehicle, while the 70 Series was introduced in 1984 as the more agricultural alternative. These two versions of the Land Cruiser continue to be sold side-by-side in countries like the UAE, Australia, and South Africa.

来yota dropped the previous-generation full-size Land Cruiser due to slow sales, but the Lexus LX will continue to carry the flag in that particular segment.

You can expect a few more teasers leading up to the unveiling, and we'll keep you posted.
