New Subaru Sports Car Concept To Be Revealed This Month

Teaser /2 Comments

Is it an electric BRZ, or something else entirely?

Subaru is planningeight EVs for the US marketby 2028, and one of them may be a new sports car previewed by an upcoming concept for the Japan Mobility Show. Dubbed the Subaru Sport Mobility concept, the teaser image reveals what is definitely a sports car silhouette in the form of a two-door coupe.

According to Subaru, the electric concept model "foreshadows the evolution of Subaru Sport value." As such, the model could set the benchmark for future sporty Subaru vehicles. While there haven't been any more details revealed, Subaru has claimed that just because vehicles will be electric doesn't mean we shouldn't derive joy from the driving experience.

Subaru has previously shown off anelectric STI conceptcalled the STI E-RA, which had four motors and 1,073 horsepower and intended to lap the Nurburgring in 6:40. This is obviously not a derivative of that concept (below) and boasts a distinctly different design language, notable in the absence of a roof scoop, rear wing, and a completely different front fascia sporting slim LED headlights.

It also seems like the new concept has fairings over the rear wheels, suggesting this may be more "wild concept" than "production intent."

But if it's not a halo electric sports car like the STI E-RA, then where would it fit into Subaru's model lineup? The obvious answer is that this previews what an electricSubaru BRZcould be.

Subaru hasn't seen the same success with the BRZ as Toyota has with the GR86, owing largely to the size of the brands and their typical demographics. Still, the BRZ/GR86 has helped form the revival of the affordable sports car. Previous reports suggested that Toyota would develop the third-gen 86sans a Subaru twin, which sets Subaru up to differentiate its sports car offering.

Going forward, the sports car need not die just because combustion does in some markets, so this concept suggests Subaru's intent to continue producing sports cars into the next generation of mobility.

The new concept will feature next to the brand's only current EV - the Solterra - and alongside the new Levorg Layback, Forester, and Crosstrek Limited.

Elsewhere at the Japan Mobility Show, Honda willreveal a new sports car,它似乎马自达会same with a new electric concept thatpreviews the future of the MX-5.

We'll find out more when the show kicks off from 25 October.
