New Porsche Panamera Will Retain V6 And V8 Engines, Turbo E-Hybrid Will Produce 650 HP

The third-generation Panamera is expected to stick around until 2030.

ThePorsche Panamerais preparing to enterits third generationand, interestingly, will retain an internal combustion engine, reportsAutocar. The British publication sampled a pre-production model, sharing new insights into the performance sedan.

尽管Panamera将保留其扇layout and signature styling, Porsche has increased the wheelbase for larger rear doors and easier ingress for front passengers. The head- and taillights have also been restyled, while a new radiator grille and wheel designs will differentiate the upcoming model from the existing 971 chassis.

Let's look at the under-the-skin updates. The third-gen Panamera is underpinned by the Modular Sport Toolkit platform, co-developed by Porsche and Bentley. According to the automaker, the Panamera is stiffer than before. This increased rigidity has been achieved with foam-filled steel parts in the front bulkhead.

When it comes to the engines, there's reason to celebrate. Porsche will offer the new Panamera with a choice of turbocharged V6 and V8 engines. The automaker will offer as many as four plug-in hybrid derivatives. This includes a new Turbo E-Hybrid, tipped to produce more than 650 horsepower.

Interestingly, this is expected to replace the current Turbo S E-Hybrid, which has outputs of 690 hp. Keep in mind that these figures are tentative for now, reportsCar and Driver. We assume Porsche will introduce a hotted-up version at a later date, with horsepower figures surpassing the existing Turbo S E-Hybrid. The Cayennewill get the same ouput.

Porsche's 4.0-liter V8 has been significantly revised and now uses single-scroll turbochargers instead of the twin-scroll items found in the current model. Not only does this improve gas mileage, but cold-start emissions are reduced, too. This has probably been done in response to thestringent Euro 7 emissions rules.

Aside from that, the new Panamera Turbo E-Hybrid will receive a new electric motor with a 25.9-kilowatt-hour battery. That's notably bigger than the 17.9 kWh pack. The larger battery brings myriad benefits, such as a reduction in CO2emissions.

The motor now produces an additional 54 hp, for a total of 188 hp. It is now housed within the dual-clutch transmission, as opposed to being attached to the bell housing. As such, the next-generation E-Power model will be significantly quicker in electric mode than the outgoing Turbo S E-Hybrid. By the way, the eight-speed PDK now has a liftoff mode that downshifts with remarkable smoothness until the car comes to a complete stop.

Panamera的s electric motor also uses internal oil cooling, which aids efficiency and recuperation power, says the report. Another benefit of the larger battery is the improved electric range. Onthe WLTP cycle, the Panamera Turbo E-Hybrid is estimated to travel 53 miles on electric power alone.

When the Panamera broke cover in 2009, it rewrote the luxury sedan rulebook for handling. Despite the heft and size, the Porsche sedan defies physics and dances around corners like few other luxury vehicles can. The Turbo E-Hybrid will use variable four-wheel drive and torque vectoring for incredible dynamism. The weight sits around 5,000 pounds, which is hefty.

Two air suspension setups will be offered. The first is a dual-chamber arrangement, while the second is a single-chamber design used by thethoroughly revised Cayenne. According to the reports, the Panamera handles crisply and rides down the road with creamy smoothness. "There's no compromise anymore," said Thomas Freimuth, Vice President of the Panamera product line. Comfort mode has been deleted because Normal is more supple, while Sport is stiffer but still not uncomfortable.

We look forward to seeing how the third-generation Panamera fares against traditional rivals such as the M5 and E63 and non-traditional rivals such as the S-Class and7 Series. More importantly, how will it stack up against the all-electricTaycan?
