New Mercedes-AMG GT Teasers Confirm Twin-Turbo V8 And AWD

Teaser /4 Comments

There may be lesser engines in base versions, but the big boys get the full-fat AMG V8 treatment.

New teasers posted by Mercedes-AMG have confirmed the presence of a V8 under the hood of the all-new, second-generationMercedes-AMG GT年代upercar. While we suspected this would be the case, there was reason to doubt. After all, Mercedes-AMG, despite being characterized by raucous V8s, is quickly going to the dark side, with the new AMG C63 powered by a 2.0-liter hybrid four-cylinder (which may or may not change sometime soon, depending on the day), while the convertible twin of the AMG GT, the AMG SL, has a four-cylinder option that we werenot fond of at a recent first drive.

The relevance of the SL here is substantial, as the new AMG GT will share a platform with it. That means that not only could the AMG GT be a 2+2 seater coupe, taking it even closer to its primary rival, the Porsche 911, but it means that AWD is in the cards to help contain the fury of its V8, the latter confirmed by a brief glimpse of a 4Matic badge in the teasers.

The teasers are typically vague, with quick cuts between shots, plumes of dust being churned up, and a few details shots of things like the wheels and the badging. One even showcases a bird's eye view of the AMG GT carving up a corner, and another lets us in on the presence of a fixed rear spoiler with stylish architectural stanchions. The best detail is the audio, though, as there can be no mistaking the growl of an AMG V8. A V8 Biturbo badge confirms this detail.

The engine in question will be the 4.0-liter bi-turbo V8 found in the outgoing AMG GT, although its exact state is unknown. M176, M177, and M178 versions all exist with differences like mild hybridization, wet vs dry sump tech, etc.

At launch, though, we assume the GT will launch, matching the 63 specification of the AMG SL. That means 577 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque and all-wheel drive with a nine-speed automatic transmission.

What remains to be seen is how it will be badged. If AMG follows the same numeric designation as the AMG SL 63, it would confusingly be named the same as theAMG GT 63 4-Door, which is an entirely different model.

Because of this, the possibility exists that Mercedes might let the GT retain proper halo status by not giving it a paltry four-cylinder engine. We can only hope this is the case. Either way, we expect varying states of tune, and a plug-in hybrid version may even feature at a later date年代porting as much as 831 horsepower. This will likely sport the E Performance moniker, while we can also expect S, R, and eventually Black Series derivatives.

We don't have long to wait, though, as the reveal takes place this week, specifically on August 19 at Monterey Car Week.
