With all the hype surrounding the2021 Ford Bronco, you'd be forgiven for forgetting all about the new Maverick. Built between 1969 and 1977 in North America, the original Ford Maverick was a compact car available as a sedan or coupe, but Ford is reviving the name for the 21st century by applying it to a new compact pickup truck.

我们已经知道特立独行的槽下方Ford Ranger, but these new spy shots shared by the Maverick Chat forum allow us to see how the two trucks compare in size. One photo shows the two trucks side-by-side, confirming the Maverick will be noticeably lower than the Ranger and a few feet shorter.

Unfortunately, the Maverick prototype is still heavily camouflaged, which makes it difficult to judge the size of the bed, but we're expecting it to be smaller than the Ranger's bed.

We also get a closer look at the Maverick's rear suspension components below the rear bumper, including the structural elements, coil springs, and the absorbers. The spare tire is also stored beneath the truck bed. As if it wasn't already obvious from the Maverick's low ride height, the low-slung exhaust system suggests the Maverick isn't designed for intensive off-roading.

The Maverick is expected to ride on a modified version of Ford's unibody platform that underpins the Escape and Bronco Sport, but a recent report claimed it will share components with the Ford Transit Connect, including its 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 162 horsepower.

The Ford Maverick should debut for the 2022 model year, so there's still plenty of time for prototypes to start shedding some camouflage to give us a clearer look at the compact pickup's design. Production will take place at Ford's Hermosillo plant in Mexico, where the Bronco Sport will also be assembled. When it goes on sale, pricing is expected to fall below $20,000 to make it a more affordable alternative to the Ford Ranger, which starts at $24,110.
