New Chevrolet Montana RS Is All Bark And No Bite

GM Brazil's compact truck has gained a sporty new trim, but it's still saddled with a feeble 133-horsepower engine.

Hot on the heels of thenew Ram Rampage, Chevrolet Brazil has revealed a sportier RS derivative of its Montana pickup, a truck不是在美国出售.

The Montana RS is set apart from the rest of the lineup thanks to several design touches. At the front, we can see a honeycomb-pattern grille with gloss black accents matching the exterior mirror caps. Machined 17-inch wheels lend the little truck some attitude, as does the integrated roof rack and black-painted Chevrolet logos. If someone still doesn't notice any difference, perhaps the RS badge affixed to the rear will clue them in.

Inside, the gloss black theme continues, with inlays on the center console, steering wheel, and around the air vents. The seats, armrests, dashboard, and three-spoke steering wheel also benefit from black leather/cloth upholstery with red stitching.

Unfortunately, the Montana RS is still saddled with the turbocharged 1.2-liter engine that does duty in other variants. The Montana can't be described as energetic, with 133 horsepower and 155 lb-ft of torque. 0 to 62 mph takes 10.1 seconds, and the top speed is limited to 112 mph.

Chevrolet Brazil says the Montana RS is surprisingly adept in the bends, where its minimal body roll and power-assisted steering come into play. An automatic transmission and comfort-tuned suspension should make it civilized for day-to-day driving.

The Montana RS has 30.9 cm3of space in the truck bed despite the relatively compact dimensions. Four colors - Summit White, Chili Red, Ouro Black, and Rush Grey - will be available at launch, and buyers can choose from a host of optional extras. This includes a JBL subwoofer, a stainless steel exhaust, sporty aluminum pedals, and illuminated door sills.

Paula Saiani, Director of Product Marketing for GM South America, says the new Montana accounts for more than two-thirds of Chevy sales in Brazil. That's significant and shows how popular small trucks are with consumers. But were it to reach our shores (and that is a possibility) would Montana be able to supplant theFord Maverick?

The Blue Oval's little tyke has been selling up a storm since it arrived and continues to rule the roost. If Chevy wants Montana to be successful in the States, the first thing it would have to change is the anemic powerplant. If GM could offer it with the 175-hp turbocharged 1.5-liter mill found in the Equinox, it may stand a chance.

But let's not forget that Hyundai also offers the accomplished Santa Cruz, and Stellantis has plans to introduce the Rampageto the North American market. The Montana will need more than an RS package and some styling frills to appeal to savvy American buyers.
