New BMW i5 Touring Spied As Electric Wagon Takes Shape

Spy Shots /4 Comments

The long-roof electric 5 Series could debut within the year.

宝马已经确认了M5 Touringis happening, but let's not forget that the standard long-roof 5ers are also underway. Our spies recently caught the all-electric i5 Touring while testing on public roads with much less camouflage thanearlier sightings this year.

Unsurprisingly, the i5 Touring shares its front end with the previously unveiledi5 sedan, albeit their grilles will be distinct. BMW continues to conceal the rear of the wagon where it matters the most, hiding details such as taillights and the entire fascia. The front fender badges are covered, too, which could be deliberate to hide trim level details from prying eyes.

That said, the i5 sedan already provides clues of the i5 Touring's powertrain setups. The i5 eDrive40 has a rear-mounted motor that puts out 335 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of instantaneous torque, with an overboost function pushing this up to to 317 lb-ft. Accelerating from 0 to 60 mph takes 5.7 seconds and ceilings at 120 mph.

The hotter i5 M60 comes with two electric motors, with a maximum combined output of 590 hp and 605 lb-ft of pulling power. This setup allows the electric sedan to sprint to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds, with a top speed of 143 mph.

Equipped with an 84.3-kilowatt-hour battery, the i5 sedan claims an estimated range of 295 miles for the eDrive40 and 256 miles for the M60 xDrive.

With those numbers, we can expect the i5 Touring to offer lower range figures given the wagon's increased body weight.

The i5 Touring is expected to launch this year, arriving simultaneously with its non-electric counterpart. BMW won't take long to launch thepreviously teased M5 Touring, considering it will arrive at dealers early in 2024. It is all but confirmed that American wagon lovers would get a taste of the M5 Touring, with BMW M boss Frank van Meel tellingCarBuzzthat theycould soon be heading stateside.

The 2023 Goodwood Festival of Speed could be a fitting venue for these BMW launches as could the 2023 Munich Motor Show in September.
