New Bentley Flying Spur Speed Could Borrow A Porsche Engine

It could have a secret weapon under the hood.

The first2020 Bentley Flying Spurhas alreadyrolled off the production line, ushering in a new era for the brand. The Flying Spur takes over as Bentley's flagship model, replacing the recently departed Mulsanne. Power in the Flying Spur comes from a 6.0-liter twin-turbocharged W12 engine producing 626 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque going out to all four wheels through an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission.

This amount of power is plenty, getting the Flying Spur up to 60 mph in just 3.8 seconds and on top a top speed of 207 mph. But we know a more powerful Flying Spur Speed is coming soon and recent spy shots have given us deeper insight into what will power Bentley's fastest sedan model. You may be surprised to hear that the faster Speed model might drop a few cylinders.

The last time the Flying Spur Speedtest mule was spotted, it was a silver car sporting black wheels and black accents. This latest mule looks far more like a traditional Flying Spur but based on the quad exhaust pipes, we can tell almost certainly that it is the Speed model.

Another tell-tale sign that this is not a standard Flying Spur is the secondary fuel door on the driver-side rear fender. On the standard car, the fuel door is located on the passenger side. This means the fuel door pictured here houses a charging port for a plug-in hybrid system.

Unlike previous Speed models, which have used highly-tuned versions of Bentley's W12, the Flying Spur is expected to borrow the hybrid drivetrain from the Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid.

In the Panamera, a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 combines with electric motors to produce 680 hp, which would make this the most powerful Speed model yet. Of course, there is also a chance that the Bentley sees a slight power increase over the Porsche, meaning a 700-hp output is entirely possible. Dropping from a W12 down to a V8 might seem questionable but there's no doubt that this new Flying Spur will be an impressive performer.
