Mitsubishi Triton XRT Concept Looks Like A Truck Americans Would Buy

It previews Mitsubishi's next-generation pickup truck.

Mitsubishi showed up to the 2023 Bangkok International Motor Show with a new pickup truck concept called the Triton XRT. Based on the Japanese automaker's mid-sizeTriton pickup truck, the XRT previews the next-generation model that will debut later this year.

Though Mitsubishi has expressed interest inbringing the truck to the US,we doubt it will come. Mitsubishi is part of the Renault-Nissan Alliance, which already sells the mid-sizeNissan Frontierin North America. Plus, selling the truck here would require Mitsubishi to build it locally.

Regardless of its US viability, the Triton XRT Concept is pretty cool. The black/silver camouflage wrap gives it a military vibe, which accentuates the already aggressive styling. Mitsubishi says the wrap is inspired by lava rocks packed with condensed energy. On the side profile, the truck wears the 10-parallel lines that signify Ralliart, Mitsubishi's high-performance and motorsports division. Seriously, this truck would look right at home in Florida or Texas.

The XRT Concept features a different grille than the standard Triton with thin headlights that make it look angry, as if someone just insulted the truck's girlfriend. Mitsubishi equipped the concept with front and rear over fenders and mud-terrain tires so it can compete in off-road rallies. This thing isn't just for show. Team Mitsubishi Ralliart will even compete with a prototype cross-country Triton at the Asia Cross Country Rally 2023.

It's unclear what engine will power the next-generation Triton, but we imagine Mitsubishi will offer a variety of gasoline and diesel four-cylinder motors. The current Triton offers both manual and automatic transmissions, and we expect the new model to do the same.

"Fiscal 2023 is an important year for Mitsubishi Motors to accelerate our business in the ASEAN region, with the launch of a fully revamped Triton and an all-new compact SUV," said Takao Kato, president and chief executive officer, Mitsubishi Motors. "The all-new Triton is going through final touch-ups in preparation for its release, as we have performed rigorous endurance tests around the world while also incorporating the know-how gained from rally activities. With the new vehicle launches as the centerpiece, we will continue our drive toward further growth."
