Million-Dollar Brabham BT62 Supercar To Be Rebooted

The Australian company wants to get back into supercar production after a slowdown.

Five years have passed since Brabham Automotive showed theBT62 track-only supercarat the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Boasting a powerful naturally-aspirated V8, a handful of the McLaren-rivaling supercars got delivered to their owners, including theroad-legal BT62R, but the numbers were cut short by a global pandemic. Now, the Australian supercar maker is looking to get back into production, according to its Formula 1-racing and Le Mans-winning owner, David Brabham.

"We're looking at a re-boot," Brabham toldCarExpert.

If the Brabham name rings a bell, David was behind the wheel of the McLaren F1 GTR that won the 1996 All Japan Grand Touring Car Championship. His father, Jack Brabham, was a three-time Formula 1 World Champion.

So, yes, speed flows through Brabham's veins, and it was evident in the BT62 supercar that his company introduced in 2018. Designed to set blistering lap times, the BT62 was powered by a 5.4-liter V8 churning out 700 horsepower and 492 lb-ft of torque. With a dry weight of just 2,142 lbs, it boasts an impressive power-to-weight ratio of 720 hp per ton while also producing a McLaren Senna GTR-beating 2,646 lbs of downforce.

Each BT62 supercar was priced at £1 million at launch or around $1.28 million at today's exchange rates.

A morehardcore BT62 Competitionwas introduced in 2019. Due to high demand, a road-going BT62R was revealed in 2020 as a rival to theMcLaren Senna- still powered by the same 700-hp V8 mill but with a quieter exhaust and a more comfortable cabin.

Whether the reboot Brabham mentioned simply means restarting production or revising the car anew remains a mystery, as he was tight-lipped about the future. Brabham toldCarExpertthat details are still in the air and under discussion.

"Some of the answers are points of discussion at the moment, so we prefer to wait till these have been sorted," he said.

We'll know more about Brabham's comeback in the coming months, as the reboot is scheduled for later this year. However, we're not expecting a production vehicle will be shown, given the implied timeline by Brabham.

"I'll tell you when we're ready," Brabham told the Australian publication.
