Mercedes Recalls Over 100,000 Vehicles For Safety Glitches

Moderns automobiles have a wide array of active and passive safety systems that rely on both mechanical and electronic components to function properly. Especially Mercedes, we might argue, which has cultivated a reputation for making some of the safest vehicles on the road. But glitches on some of its vehicles have left some of those safety features disabled, prompting the German automaker to issue two recalls in the United States for a staggering array of models.

The much larger of the two recalls concerns the passenger side airbag, which may indicate that it's activated even when it isn't.

The problem is limited to certain 2018 and 2019 models in theC-ClassandGLC范围,including sedans, coupes, convertibles, crossovers, crossover coupes, hybrids, and even AMG performance variants – some 16 models in all, encompassing a total of 104,663 vehicles in the United States. Fixing the issue will require simply reflashing the software for the audio head unit in a process that's set to begin on January 2.

Mercedes has also issued a second recall for another safety system that covers a much smaller number of vehicles, but from a broader range of models.

This time the problem is with the seatbelt sensors, which may not register that the buckle is fastened and therefor not activate the seatbelt pre-tensioners in the event of the crash. This recall affects an estimated 5,433 vehicles in the United States, split between theC-Class coupeandcabriolet,E-Class coupeandcabriolet, and theS-Class– including the S450, S560,AMG S63and S65, and theMaybach S560 and S650limousines. Mercedes is instructing dealers to replace the seatbelt buckles to remedy the problem in a campaign set to kick off on January 25.
