Mercedes-Benz CLE Coupe Hybrid Spied In Frigid Winter Testing

Spy Shots /3 Comments

Mercedes continues to put the CLE through its paces.

We've got some more shots of the slick newMercedes-Benz CLEprototype testing this week, kicking off winter testing for Mercedes in Europe. As we know, two body styles will be offered for the CLE: a convertible, which we'vespied before, and a CLE coupe (four-door sedan). This is, evidently, the latter, equipped withplug-in power.

We know that some EU regulations stipulate a carmaker must advertise its products as a hybrid or electric for the safety of first responders in the event of an accident. Here, there's a sticker present on the rear window. Obviously, there's also a charge port if you look closely enough at the rear right bumper.

Mercedes will be swapping out the coupe and convertible versions of both its C and E Class models to simplify its lineup, making things a little less "alphabet soup" in Germany. Rather than four total models across both classes, we'll be down to two, which makes sense seeing as Mercedes easily sells more of its GLC and GLE-Class SUVs and crossovers than the equivalent sedans.

With these latest images, we can see that Mercedes hasn't made any drastic changes to this test car's looks, but the headlights are somewhat more visible. We also note that this car is obviously riding on higher-profile winter rubber.

Mercedes has had to do some shuffling around with the charge ports for its new hybrids. On four-door models, like the one pictured here, the port had to be moved to the rear left fender. This should also apply to future SUV plug-ins as well. On coupes, presumably due to less real estate to work with, the port has moved to the rear right side of the bumper.

For now, Mercedes continues to withhold a reveal date. When we saw thesporty CLE63 Coupe, it was rumored that we'll be seeing the new CLE sometime next year. For now, we're sticking to that projection until new information comes to light.
