Mercedes-AMG Is Cooking Up A Hot New GLC 63

Here's your first look at the new Mercedes-AMG GLC 63.

Prototypes of thenext-generation Mercedes GLChave beenspied undergoing testingfor over a year now, so it should only be a matter of time before the production version breaks cover. Naturally, this also means Mercedes-AMG is cooking up a hot new performanceGLC 63, which has been spied for the first time on its way to the Nurburgring for some intense track testing as it prepares to battle theBMW X3 M.

Mercedes-AMG has covered the prototype in camouflage, but it can't hide the performance SUV's Panamericana grille that indicates this is no ordinary GLC.

Compared to the regular GLC, the new AMG GLC 63 also sports a wider track, wider side sills, and signature square quad exhaust pipes. The AMG GLC 63 also rides lower to the ground on larger wheels with beefier brakes.

Our spies were unable to get any photos of the interior, but expect the new AMG GLC 63 to be equipped with an 11.9-inch display running the latest MBUX software and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. As for engine options, the new AMG GLC 63 will share the same engines as thenext-generation AMG C63.

This means the new GLC 63 will ditch the current model's 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 in favor of an electrified 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder engine. It may lack the thunderous roar of its V8-powered predecessor, but the new GLC 63 will be no slouch in the performance department.

With electrical assistance, this unit is rumored to develop 650 hp. This will be a significant boost over the current GLC 63, which generates 469 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque. Mercedes hasn't announced when the new GLC will debut. We're expecting the standard model to be unveiled either later this year or early next year, so the high-performance AMG version is unlikely to arrive until late 2022 and go on sale as a 2023 model.
