Mazda Is Definitely Up To Something RX-Related

Rumor /21 Comments

Hint: it's not a crossover.

Here we go again. Another month, another reborn Mazda RX rotary sports car rumor. But before we get to that, let's reiterate what Mazda has already confirmed. Indeed it is working onnew rotary technology, though this new rotary motor aims to serve as a backup power generator for an all-electric vehicle, possibly a future extended-range version of the newMazda MX-30.

But Mazda also has something big happening today (it was officially founded on January 30, 1920): its 100th anniversary. This is a pretty big deal for any company, especially an automaker that has managed to stay in business through a couple of world wars and serious domestic competition. Respect. Therefore, shouldn't there be a special vehicle to commemorate its centennial?

我们是这样认为的,Jalopnik索赔it has information about this subject from an anonymous source familiar with Mazda's inner workings. Supposedly, a new Mazda RX-9 sports car is being developed right now. It's claimed to have a turbocharger to help produce between 350 and 450 horsepower. But that's not the biggest news. This is: it won't have a Wankel rotary engine. Instead, a 3.0-liter inline-six version of the Skyactiv engine will be utilized. This engine's existence is nothing new.

In fact, a rumor from last Septemberhad a similar claimregarding the RX-9 and the inline-six pairing, but a 48-volt mild-hybrid system was also added to the mix. This time around, there's no mention of anything hybrid.

So what can we take from this? Well, it sure sounds like Mazda is cooking up a new sports car and the name RX-9 would make sense, given the RX-8 was discontinued in 2012. Having something special and possibly limited in production for 100 years of zoom-zoom would certainly be welcome. This latest rumor, combined with the previous one, adds further evidence something is happening and the new inline-six engine seems to play a key role.

Whether it'll be a hybrid or not is another piece of the puzzle we don't have yet.
