Mazda Delays CX-70 Launch, New EV Coming In 2025

Industry News /2 Comments

The EV will likely be a crossover using an existing nameplate.

Mazda has confirmed that the newCX-70SUV's launch is delayed until 2024, while a new fully electric vehicle is expected in 2025. These developments were divulged by Mazda North America CEO Tom Donnelly, who was speaking to一个utomotive News.

Initially, Mazda intended to launch the two-row CX-70 this year. Considering it's November, and it hasn't even been revealed yet, perhaps the delayed launch date isn't a surprise.

With an available hybrid powertrain, the CX-70 is expected to offer a similar level of luxury as the larger, three-rowCX-90. The CX-90 is themost upscale Mazda we have ever driven, and if the CX-70 can replicate this recipe at a lower price point, it could become the best-selling model for the brand. The CX-90 - available with both four-cylinder hybrid and six-cylinder gas powertrains - is surpassing the CX-9 in sales and market share.

The CX-70 will be America's version of the CX-60 launched in Europe (pictured below). Assuming it accurately mirrors the CX-90's powertrains, the 2.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid will make 323 horsepower combined, while the 3.3-liter turbocharged inline-six mill will make either 280 or 340 hp. We expect all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic to be standard.

Mazda's foray into the EV segment has been limited, to say the least, which is why the promise of a new EV for 2025 is such big news. The MX-30 that has beendiscontinued in the USAlacked the driving range or availability to be a success. While Donnelly didn't reveal specifics about the new EV, he did say it will be an existing nameplate and likely a crossover.

Considering the CX-5's age, as well as the arrival of the CX-50, we wouldn't be surprised if Mazda's 2025 EV is a fully electric CX-5. The CX-30 seems less likely since producing an EV at its lower price point is more challenging, although an electric CX-30 does exist for the Chinese market.

意志力的新电动车,我们know thatToyota will share its EV advancementswith Mazda and other Japanese automakers, but these technologies may only be ready after Mazda's EV arrives. Depending on customer demand, Mazda will add more EVs to its local lineup.

Until it has a competitive EV range, Mazda will continue investing in plug-in hybrids, much like Honda and Toyota. The CX-90 PHEV, for instance, has a claimed 26-mile all-electric range, and its recent sales have been robust.

"Plug-in hybrid is the right technology for the marketplace today, given any number of challenges in terms of infrastructure and everything else," said Donnelly. "We're committed to an electrified future, but for the near term, we feel like we have the right technology.

一个lthough Mazda remains a small brand in the USA compared to the likes of Toyota and Honda, it's on track to surpass 350,000 sales this year, and its market share is at its highest in the 50-plus years it has been around in the USA. With a new EV and the two-row CX-70 on the way, the company will be in a good position to hit its target of over 500,000 car sales by 2025.
