Mazda CX-60 Will Be Brand's First PHEV With Over 300 HP

Teaser /6 Comments

The CX-60 could preview the hybrid powertrain set to be added to our CX-50.

The CX-60 is set to be Mazda's first-ever plug-in hybrid product and the Japanese carmaker has announced that the car will be revealed on March 8, 2022.

Mazda is quiet regarding details of its upcoming crossover but it has revealed that its upcoming SUV will be powered by its 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that will work in conjunction with an electric motor to produce more than 300 horsepower. Using this, Mazda says the CX-60 will offer drivers powerful acceleration capabilities that don't sacrifice refinement or efficiency.

Don't expect to see the CX-60 stateside as we already have the USA-exclusiveMazda CX-50. This will be followed by a larger CX-70 andCX-80of which the latter will offer a three-row cabin configuration.

The CX-60, which wasleaked late last year, is the first ofMazda's Large Product Group strategywhich will be followed by the aforementioned CX-70, CX-80, and existing CX-9. This move is being made to solidify its presence in the SUV and crossover segments with a focus on sustainability and efficiency. Like the CX-50, this new crossover is expected to be a supplementary product that sits above the CX-5.

The CX-50 is powered by the company's Skyactiv-G 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with the option of turbocharging for those who need more power. Without any induction, the unit delivers 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque while forced induction increases this to 250 hp and 320 lb-ft. Mazda has confirmed that a hybrid option will be introduced with parts supplied by itscurrent technical partner, Toyota.

Considering this, there is a possibility that the CX-60 and CX-50 hybrid will do away with the Skyactiv-G mill and appropriate the 2.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine as found in the Lexus NX450h+ and other hybrid products from the Toyota group. This powertrain works in conjunction with an electric motor to produce a combined 304 hp which falls in line with Mazda's claims.

Seeing that the CX-50 is a USA-exclusive product, we can expect the CX-60 to be dedicated to the Europeans. As a result, it's unlikely to incorporate the brand's upcoming rear-wheel-drive platform.
