Maserati's New GranTurismo Will Be A Sexy Sports EV

We can't wait.

Maserati seemed like the laziest car company in the world for a long time. Cars like the GranTurismo and Levante just haven't been brought up to speed with modern technology, but then the Italian automaker announced a groundbreaking new supercar called theMC20, and we realized that those carmakers in Modena are still capable of excellence, even without Ferrari's help.

Maserati used the hype to kickstart a program of new cars, including anew baby SUV. The company is also working on an all-newGranTurismo, at long last, and following somerecent teaser images, we decided to consolidate all we know so far about the sports car.

Based on those teaser images, it seems that the new GranTurismo will feature headlights inspired by the MC20 and a sharper front end. We've also added the MC20's wheels to our renders, although the teaser images likely show the electric version that will be Maserati's first all-electric vehicle. As such, it has no need for side intake scoops. Remember how beautiful the Ferrari 458 Italia was with no obvious side intakes? Well it looks like Maserati has the right proportions - now it's just a matter of getting the styling right. Italians tend to know what they're doing in that department, so expect a curvaceous hunk of sexy sheet metal.

As for powertrains, these are still early days and Maserati hasn't given us much to go on just yet. However, the fact that we can see a clamshell hood on the teaser images along with patches hiding vents on the front fenders - a la Porsche 911 GT3 RS - suggest that we'll have a serious performer here. We also know what Maserati is reserving the MC20's twin-turbo V6for that car alone, so the GranTurismo will get some other kind of V6 for its gas-powered variants, likely with considerably less than 620 horsepower as in the MC20 and more than the old car's 454 hp. We don't know much more but expect four seats and a convertible version too. Let's just hope it's a great car rather than just a characterful one this time.
