Maserati Shows MC20 Convertible For The First Time

Teaser /4 Comments

Expect an official debut in 2022.

We've known this was coming and now Maserati has provided an early preview of the 2023MC20 convertible. Like its coupe sibling, the convertible will come powered by atwin-turbo 3.0-liter V6rated at 621 horsepower. That's paired to a fast-shifting eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox that directs output to the rear wheels only.

The MC20 convertible pictured here is clearly a prototype, evidenced by the camouflage it's still wearing during testing in Modena, Italy. The carmaker says it "has selected a new look for its camouflage, featuring a play of clouds; after all, it is a convertible." The overall design doesn't look very different from the coupe.

That makes sense because Maserati designed the supercar from the get-go to accommodate both coupe and convertible body styles. The only difference is the folding hardtop. Maserati has not provided an exact reveal date just yet, but we know for sure it'll happen sometime in 2022. Sales could potentially get underway as soon as this spring, just in time for summer.

Perhaps the even biggerMC20news is the upcoming fully electrified version. The current car can blast from 0 to 60 mph in about 2.8 seconds; accelerating to 124 mph happens in less than 8.8 seconds. Top speed is clocked at 202 mph. Those are very impressive numbers and the EV variant will probably boast even better figures.

Hopefully, we'll be seeing some spy shots of that car testing in the coming months. We could see that unveiling by this time next year. Aside from swapping out the V6 powertrain for electric motors and batteries, the MC20 EV (a slight name change is expected) will retain a body composed of carbon fiber and composite materials to help keep weight in check.

The $210,000 MC20 coupe has been a solid success for the Italian brand. It's alreadysold outfor the 2022 model year. Orders are underway for 2023 and we suspected even more customers will come once the convertible arrives.
