Lucid Motors is aiming to set new standards for electric vehicles. Earlier this month, it was revealed the Lucid Air will have anEPA-rated range of 517 miles, beating theTesla Model Sby over 100 miles. It's also theworld's most aerodynamic carand thefastest-charging EV, capable of adding 300 miles of range in 20 minutes. But these aren't the only impressive benchmarks Lucid has achieved, as the automaker has announced the Air will have more interior space than any other electric sedan on the market.
This is possible thanks to the Lucid Air's unique layout and engineering packaging called the 'Lucid Space Concept', which utilizes Lucid's miniaturized electric drivetrain and compact 113kWh long-range battery pack to optimize the interior cabin space.
Thanks to this innovative design, Lucid claims the Air is the "first EV designed from the ground up around the spatial benefits enabled by the miniaturization of an electric drivetrain and battery pack," resulting in class-leading passenger space within the compact exterior. Using a dual motor setup, the electric drivetrain produces up to 1,000 horsepower.
"It's relatively easy to achieve more range by adding progressively more batteries, but gaining 'dumb range' that way increases weight and cost, and reduces interior space," said Peter Rawlinson, CEO of Lucid Motors. "Lucid Air has achieved its remarkable range whilst also reducing battery size through its in-house technology, resulting in a breakthrough in overall vehicle-level efficiency."
"By pursuing this 'smart range' approach, Lucid shall not only be able to offer the Air with this unprecedented absolute range, but also offer future models that achieve competitive range from proportionately smaller battery packs, thereby saving cost, weight, and space. Lucid's breakthrough is not merely just a few percent; we are talking about a significant improvement, which I shall cover further on September 9. This represents a true breakthrough and what excites me the most for the future and for Lucid's role in advancing electrification and sustainable mobility."
As well as offering unrivaled interior passenger space and comfort in its class, the Lucid Air also features the largest frunk in a production EV, with a capacity of over 280 liters.
Lucid claims this is 89 percent larger than the current leader in the Lucid Air's vehicle class and 40 percent larger than the current electric SUV with the largest frunk capacity. Combining the trunk, the Lucid Air offers a total of 739 liters of luggage space, which is the best in its class for both electric and internal combustion engine vehicles by a significant margin.
While Lucid has been drip-feeding us juicy details about the Air, the production version of the revolutionary electric sedan will debut online on September 9. As well as showing the final exterior and interior, Lucid will share new details about the production specifications, configurations, and pricing.
