Or at least it could be if BYD's claims of its new U6 sedan are proven true.

BYD may havepaused its entry into the US, but the Chinese automaker has quite a promising lineup outside North America, including the world's most slippery production car, with the new U6 slated to usurp thelucid Airon the list ofmost aerodynamic cars.

Reports from the People's Republic suggest the newcomer will edge out the Lucid Air by the slimmest of margins, alleging the YangWang U6 has a drag coefficient (Cd) of 0.195. The Lucid's Cdis only a hair behind that at 0.197. Following the Air in the list of slippery EVs is the Mercedes-Benz EQS, which has a Cdof 0.202.

For the uninitiated, YangWang is the luxury arm of BYD, emerging in 2023 as part of the automaker's EV offensive known as New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) in China. YangWang has yet to reveal the U6 sedan in full, with its initial form unearthed through a patent filing in Europe (above) and its profile slightly revealed in a presentation slide in which the drag coefficient was declared.

Design-wise, the U6 looks sleek in the preview captured during the recent presentation in China, with a high beltline and a coupe-like silhouette from the side. The 3D rendering in the patent submission appears stubbier, though we couldn't help but see its similarity with theYangWang U9 supercarrevealed earlier this year, especially up front.

Beyond the drag coefficient, there aren't any technical specifications for the YangWang U6. However, we can expect its aerodynamic body - assuming it holds in the production version - to help increase the sedan's full electric range. Looking at the non-luxury BYD, theTesla Model S-rivaling Han EV, the "ultra-safe Blade Battery technology" offers up to 376 miles of range (CLTC test).

Moreover, reports from China stipulated that the U6 could have a four-motor powertrain good for 1,180 horsepower. This setup is also found in thehuge YangWang U8and U9. The sedan may also arrive as a plug-in hybrid, but we'll know more details once it gets formally launched with a projected price of around 800,000 yuan or $110,400 in the current exchange rates.
