The beloved track is now under private control with a long-term guarantee on its future.

Laguna Seca lovers will be happy to learn that the famous track's long-term future is secure. The Monterey County Board of Supervisors recently approved a new long-term concession agreement with the non-profit organization Friends of Laguna Seca.

For the first time since it was built in 1957, the track, officially named the WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, will be managed in collaboration with a private entity.

"On behalf of Friends of Laguna Seca, I want to thank the Board of Supervisors of Monterey County and A&D Narigi LLC for their cooperation and support in creating this valuable public/private partnership that will secure the financial stability and long-term future for Laguna Seca," said Ross Merrill, President of Friends of Laguna Seca. "The positive energy of this collaboration will serve as a springboard to new opportunities for lasting benefits of Laguna Seca and our local community for many years to come."

Board Chair Luis Alejo announced the unanimous five-to-nil decision and called it a significant positive step forward for both the track and the community of Monterey County.

"One of the primary initiatives of the Board of Supervisors when we began managing Laguna Seca in January 2020 was to assess the business and make recommendations on how to improve the facility and its business model," said John Narigi, President and General Manager of Laguna Seca Recreation Area. "After three years, it is readily apparent that entering into a long-term concession agreement with Friends of Laguna Seca is the right strategy for future financial success and sustainability of the enterprise."

"The FLS Board brings to this partnership extensive backgrounds and success in business, marketing, fundraising, construction, and motorsports. For all of us, Laguna Seca is our passion," saidBruce Canepa, Vice President of Friends of Laguna Seca.

The county recently invested some money to repave the track's surface and to construct a new Start-Finish bridge. This new partnership will bring additional resources and opportunities to Laguna Seca, with the primary aim being to get theoften-mimickedtrack to a point where the facilities match its world-renowned reputation.

Over the years, Laguna Seca has hosted MotoGP, the short-lived A1 GP, the Rolex Sports Car Series, IndyCar, and the Intercontinental GT Challenge. The track was in contention to host the 1989 United States Grand Prix, but the organizers deemed it too small and remote.

Laguna Seca is classified as an FIA Grade Two circuit, which means it can't host a Formula 1 race without significant upgrades. But America already has three Grands Prix, so why not add a fourth?

The currentproduction car recordbelongs to the Czinger 21C, though production hasn't started yet. That means theTesla Model S Plaidis still king, even though the 21C beat its 1:28.2 time by roughly three seconds.
