Is Volkswagen Planning A 500 HP Super GTI?

Rumor /54 Comments

Or maybe something even better is in the works.

We've seen some pretty insane concepts at the Woerthersee fan meet over the years, and when VW brought a GTI with a 500-horsepower VR6 this year, we looked at it the way as the others: a very cool idea, but not something we'd expect to see make it to production. But a new report from Auto Week might be an indicator that the car will live on after all. Now, nobody is saying there will be a 500-horsepower Golf just yet, but we have been told that the twin-turbo 3.0-liter VR6 is a go.

This engine was the same one used in the Woerthersee concept, so feel free to draw your own conclusions. It could always be that the engine is intended for a bigger car, just as the 3.6-liter VR6 was used in the Passat R36. Although the Passat was never the intended recipient of the VR6, and the narrow angle of the engine is used specifically to make it fit into the smaller engine compartments of cars like the Golf. So possibilities abound, and with talk still flying around about a Scirocco successor, we might be left with no choice but to get our hopes up.
