Hyundai Shares More Details And Engine Choices Of Funky New Kona

Industry News /4 Comments

Details of the US-bound model and the electric variant are to follow.

Following thereveal in December last year, Hyundai has shared more details regarding the new 2024Konarange. While the information concerns the Korean variant, it gives us an idea of what to expect from US-bound models.

Let's kick off with the engines on offer. Hyundai says gas-only variants will be powered by either a 2.0-liter Atkinson cycle engine or a turbocharged 1.6-liter mill. The former produces a middling 147 horsepower and up to 132 lb-ft of torque. Those looking for more power will prefer the latter, which musters up 195 hp and 195 lb-ft.

Interestingly, Hyundai does not mention what gearbox the lustier model makes use of but notes the 2.0-liter is paired with an intelligent variable transmission. We wouldn't be surprised to see these engines arrive in the US, as they mirror the displacement and power figures of the Kia Seltos, which wasalso refreshed for the 2024 model year.

The Kona will also be offered as a hybrid and fully-electric vehicle. Hyundai is yet to reveal additional details about the EV but notes the Korean market hybrid will use a "specially calibrated" 1.6-liter direct injection power plant that, together with an electric motor, produces combined outputs of 139 hp and 195 lb-ft.

"We make a Kona for practically everyone and every lifestyle, with a range of advanced powertrains and a host of technologies and design features that will add value to our customers' daily lives," said the company's Heui Won Yang.

Hyundai claims the Kona has best-in-class interior space, which is a result of larger dimensions and clever design. As previously reported, the subcompact crossover has grown in size and, for example, offers second-row passengers 55 inches of shoulder room. In-cabin space has also been maximized by fitting seats that are just 3.34 inches thick.

Other examples of inspired interior design include the relocation of the gear selector behind the steering wheel, freeing up space on the center console. Whether we get the same fascia in America remains unknown at this point. Fold the rear backrest flat and Hyundai claims the Kona offers up a sizeable 25.5 cubic feet (based on SAE testing methods) of cargo space.

At first glance, all members of the Kona family appear the same. Look closely, however, and you'll note subtle styling differences. ICE and hybrid variants have a more traditional front bumper with a radiator grille, whereas the EV receives a skid plate and some futuristic styling touches.

The all-electric Kona also does without the black wheel arch cladding worn by the gasoline and hybrid models. To improve efficiency, the ICE and hybrid models both have active upper air flaps for improved aerodynamics. The hybrid also has an active lower air flap.

And let's not forget the sportiest of the bunch, the N Line. This "performance-inspired model" has anotably more aggressive design, with sportier bumpers front and rear, twin exhaust finishers, and side skirts, to name a few features. Step inside, and you'll note a few changes, too. N Line models boast classy metal pedals and an N-branded gear shifter. Optional features include a black-painted roof and 19-inch N Line wheels.

Over-the-air (OTA) updates will enable owners to constantly update their vehicles, while convenience features like a smart power tailgate and seat position memory settings will make life much easier. Thanks to Hyundai's Digital Key 2 Touch, the Kona can be started, locked, and unlocked via NFC on your smartphone.

We can expect details about the US market model (and Kona Electric) to follow in March. Hopefully, important information such as pricing will also be released then.
