Gran Turismo Movie Plays Fast And Loose With The Truth

Movies & TV /8 Comments

It turns out the film is not as accurate as some would like to believe.

Gran Turismomade its wide debut in the USA this past weekend, following a small-scale release earlier in August. The movie is claimed to be "based on a true story," but already there's controversy as Hollywood took some liberties with the "truth." Shocker, we know.

The main criticism leveled against the film is a tragic incident involving Jann Mardenborough, the real-life person who serves as the protagonist of the film.Gran Turismouses a real-life incident as motivation for Mardenborough, played by Archie Madekwe. Mardenborough'sNissan GT-Rcrashed off the Nurburgring in 2015, killing a spectator. This happened in 2015, two years after Mardenborough made his debut at Le Mans.

The South African director dragged the crash earlier into Mardenborough's career to use it as inspiration for the character to do well at Le Mans. Understandably, some people aren't happy that Andy Gehrmann's unfortunate death is used as a plot device.

This is just one of the inconsistencies, according togtplanet- a publication that has been following theGran Turismoseries since 2001 and Jann Mardenborough's career since the start. It has had unique access to the driver's life and multiple interviews spanning his career. It did a full breakdown of the movie and all the inconsistencies that popped up during the two-hour film "based on a true story."

There are some spoilers here, so if you haven't seen the movie...

Jann Mardenborough日产GT奥斯卡得主,but he wasn't the first as depicted in the film. Mardenborough was the fifth winner. The GT Academy depiction is quite accurate, as the various competitors had to go through various hardships before reaching a grand finale, which pitted them against each other in race-prepped Nissan 370Zs. Mardenborough won that race, but according togtplanet, a win was not enough. Mardenborough only won after F1 celebs like Johnny Herbert and Eddie Irvine rated the competitors' performances.

After winning the GT Academy in the film, Mardenborough is immediately thrust into GT3 racing, starting at the Red Bull Ring. In the real world, Mardenborough first had to earn points for an international driving license. To be fair, it would have been a major downer in the plot to watch Mardenborough go through fitness, media, and marshall training at domestic races in the UK.

Also, Mardenborough made his racing debut in a GT4-spec racer and not a GT3 car. We'll save you an explainer, but there's a vast difference between the two formulas. For proof, read up on the newFord Mustang in GT4 specand then compare it with therecently unveiled GT3 racing car. They're worlds apart.

Mardenborough had a successful racing career but lost out when Nissan decided to pull out of motorsport. He moved on to Super Formula andSuper GTin Japan, which is an epic racing series. But there are downsides to only racing in Japan.

"When I was in Japan, I lived out there. I love Super GT; it's my favorite championship - the cars are amazing. I love living out there. However, when you're in a region for five years, you aren't visible in Europe or in the rest of the world," said Mardenborough. "Coming back, it's kind of, you have to be loud again. The movie helps, I guess, with just my name being bright. It doesn't mean that I'm going to get in a seat because you still have to prove yourself. If I can get a test, fine, it's all good. I know I can jump in a car be, you know, quick straight away."

The fact is, Mardenborough is still looking for a seat, hoping to get a seat in GT3, IMSA, and/or endurance racing. Unfortunately, motorsport has a short memory of racers' past accomplishments.Nyck de Vries got booted by AlphaTauriand seemingly can't find a seat anywhere as he recently enrolled in business school.

It will be interesting to see if this semi-biographical movie impacts Mardenborough's career.

Our Take

So, people are angry that Hollywood took liberties with the truth. It would be more shocking if Hollywood brought out a movie that stuck closely to fact. We can name a few high-profile movies that took liberties with the truth, so we shall. Examples includeBraveheart,Captain Phillips,Fargo,Pocahontas,Cool Runnings,Argo,Foxcatcher,American Sniper,The Blind Side,A Beautiful Mind, andRush. The latter gets close to the truth because Niki Lauda was involved, but even Hollywood had to make James Hunt even more of a party animal because the real-life version wasn't risque enough.

Either way, American audiences aren't interested in theGran Turismomovie, as it had a disappointing $17.3 million opening. This meant it finally outsold芭比娃娃, which only made $17.1 million this past weekend.芭比娃娃has been out since 21 July and has grossed more than a billion, so it's hardly an epic win.
