God Help Us All If Toyota Ever Kills The 4Runner

Is it living on borrowed time?

Welcome to 2016, everyone. In case you haven't noticed, this is the era of the crossover, hybrid, EV and, of course, the hybrid/EV crossover. Lovely how they're combining all three, right? For the average consumer that's great news. Having sufficient interior space in a vehicle that's fuel efficient and looks like an SUV but really isn't is apparently so much better than owning a minivan. But what about the genuine SUV? You know, the body-on-frame chassis type that once dominated the US market? Mass extinction, almost.

Few have survived the great crossover take over, andone of them is the Toyota 4Runner. What else is there, mid-size SUV wise? The Toyota FJ Cruise? Dead. The Nissan Pathfinder? Evolution turned it into a crossover. Call it the "Mallfinder" instead.

Fortunately, the Jeep Wrangler still exists but its Cherokee sibling is now a crossover, too. Butwe recently spent some time behind the wheel of the 2016 Toyota 4Runnerand it literally felt like 1995 all over again. Man, we miss the 90s. Heck, we miss any decade when genuine body-on-frame SUVs were abundant.
