Getaway Driver TV Show Is Grand Theft Auto Meets Baby Driver

This could be our new favorite car show.

我n addition to the UK and US versions of Top Gear and newThe Grand Tourspecial, we're always looking for new car shows to watch. The racing-related comedies are hit and miss, butNetflix's Hyperdrivereality show was a winner. That's why when we heard about this new show on Discovery and Discovery Plus, it piqued our interest.

Getaway Driver will be hosted by Michele Rodriguez ofFast and Furiousfame. She'll be joined by rally champion Wyatt Knox in an eight-episode series the company is billing as part Baby Driver and part Grand Theft Auto. We like both of those things and we're already in. Be honest, you too would like to see if you could outrun professional drivers (in a controlled environment, of course).

Like Hyperdrive, contestants will use their own cars in the series where "24 elite drivers from drift champions to street racers to hotshot YouTubers" will compete on a 60-acre compound to see…who's the best criminal? We're guessing? The drivers get a stack of cash and then have to get out of the compound before they're caught by the pursuers.

The pursuers are trained driving experts who know every inch of the compound, according to Wyatt. And from the trailer we can see them crashing into the contestants, hard, in their Ford Crown Victorias and Chevy Caprice police cars. And that compound has a ton of hazards in addition to the expert drivers.

The game area is broken into zones including the chemical plant, the woods, the office park and a few others, each with their own character and obstacles. Some are better suited for fast street cars, some for rally cars and off-roaders. In the trailer we can see a souped upChevy Corvette, a Ford Taurus SHO, Nissan 350Z, a couple of Subarus and even a time attack car built for GridLife.

The show goes live on July 19 on the Discovery Channel. Discovery Plus subscribers got to see it from July 12, so if you have that service, you can already watch the first episode. We did, and we can tell it's going to be a winner. Check out the trailer above and tune in next Monday for the premiere.
