Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung (IAA) is a difficult acronym to remember, which is why you probably know it as the Frankfurt Motor Show. Except that, afteralmost 70 years, the show is nowmoving to Munich in 2021due to a steady decline in attendance at Frankfurt. Auto shows the world over have had a tough time of it of late, with many being postponed or canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, the IAA is facing another challenge, and it's got nothing to do with the spread of the virus. According to reports fromAutomotive News Europe, climate activists are considering a disruption of the event.

These activists have created a slogan too: "#blockIAA - disempower car companies, protect the climate." The activist group is called Sand in the Gears and said, "In September, we stand in the way of the destructive car madness." But why do they feel this way? After all, the2019 edition of the showrevealed brilliant new EVs, the likes of which include the spectacular Porsche Taycan, and this year's edition will mark the public debut of theBMW i4and iX.

A statement given toAutomotive News Europeenunciates the view that "neither from a social nor an ecological point of view are electric cars a solution. We are heading unchecked toward a climate catastrophe. Despite this, Germany continues to press the accelerator: ever bigger and fatter cars are clogging up our roads, taking away the air we breathe and heating up the climate."

These are the same protestors reported to have blocked the main entrance to the abovementioned IAA event in 2019, when it was still hosted in Frankfurt. It's unclear if the event organizers - Verband der Automobilindustrie, or VDA - will look to block the protest by appealing to the courts, but either way, this year's edition of the show looks to be one of the toughest to host. The pandemic's ongoing scourge on the world forced organizers to scale down the show, and then things got worse as big players in the industry like Toyota, Fiat, Peugeot, and Opel all announced that they would not be presenting anything at the show or otherwise participating at all.
